(( Cockpit of the USS Galaktoboureko - Main Shuttlebay, Deck 11, USS Artemis-A ))
Kyle wasn’t one for
away missions, especially ones that weren’t supervised by one of the
command-level leaders… They invariably led to lower-deckers getting into nasty
situations, or getting reamed out for making poor choices. He, for one, had
been on the receiving end of Captain MacKenzie’s scathing demeanor before, but
now that she was no longer posted to Sickbay, his life was infinitely easier
without being under her direct gaze. Getting into trouble and receiving a
verbal dressing down was not an experience he was interested in repeating.
And yet, he found himself joining the team on the Galaktoboureko – someone had to supervise the kids, after all – who had already assembled by the time he made his way to the shuttlebay. It was a routine survey mission, after all, but in his time on the Artemis, he’d learned the lesson that things rarely turned out to be as simple as they seemed on the outset.
Silveira: I
heard you could use a hand.
Morgan: Or several.
Gnai: Oh, hello Lieutenant Sadar!
Sadar: Oh! Uhh... H-Hello. I’m
sorry, I didn’t expect-
Vailani: Nice to see you again, Lieutenant Silveira.
Vailani: :: in greeting :: Lieutenant Gnai.
Sadar: Vai-net!
Vailani: Gila-net!
Morgan smiled slightly at the friends’ apparent reunion.
Silveira: Looks like we have an interesting bunch here.
Imril: I try not to be
boring.
Vailani: :: formal :: Nice to meet you :: nods :: Lieutenant Vailani.
Gnai bobbed within its tank as agreement, and Kyle nodded slightly. The crew of the Artemis appeared to be anything but.
Sadar: Y-Yeah, we’ll be ready
to take off soon. Uhh... The sensors are reading green, but maybe Ensign Imril
should do a final systems check before we take off? It would be a waste to go
to Laoi III only to realize something’s wrong.
Imril: Aye, Doctor. I was just
coming in to start that.
Kyle took a seat at one of the stations in the rear. His presence on this team was
one of scientific curiosity, but also to offer another pair of experienced
hands in case anything went south.
Silveira:
So, Lieutenant Sadar, what are we heading ourselves into?
Their new operations chief seemed to be irritated at the lack
of preparation by the tactical chief. Good to know that most of the
department chiefs on the Artemis were cranky, not just Genkos.
Vailani: :: curt :: Didn’t you read the briefing?
Morgan: ::sarcastically:: What’s the fun in that?
Sadar: Well, there’s a few separate survey goals associated with our trip. ::gestures to the bunch of PADDs:: I have a project that I’m hoping to find some biological samples for, and I know the tactical department had some concerns regarding the interplay between the new sensors and the targeting arrays for the shuttle’s weapons systems?
Silveira:
Now that’s my language. And I assume I can count on your engineering skills
Ensign Imril?
Imril: I expect so, Sir, yes. I wasn’t part of
the team that upgraded the sensors, but I’ve reviewed the build notes.
Everything looks pretty straightforward. These sensors draw a little more
heavily on the shuttle’s power stores than the standard model for this class,
partially to process the extra data. But nothing that will eat irreparably into
the surplus generated by the engine core.
Gnai:
::a bit hesitant to butt in:: There are also some anomalous radiation readings
from the star in the system… Sir.
Morgan: Wouldn’t be an Artemis mission
without anomalous readings.
Silveira:
Is there a designated pilot, or can I take the spot.
Sadar:
Response
Sil turned and winked at the others.
Silveira:
You will all be in good hands.
Vailani:
Are your certifications up to date, Lieutenant?
Kyle smirked and shook his head. Fools.
Vitor shrugged and headed to the pilot’s seat.
Silveira:
A type eleven I only flew… Once. But they say it’s like riding a bike.
Gnai: A bike…?
Vailani: A pedal-driven single track vehicle. :: sighs :: Hardly an assuring comparison.
Vitor
seemed to laugh off the comment.
Sadar: Response
Silveira:
The expedition leader is Doctor Sadar, any complaints should be addressed to
her.
Imril: Doctor, a question not
a complaint. You said you’re planning to pick up biological samples. How are we
set up for storing them?
Kyle perked up, the question piquing his interest.
Morgan: We’ve got stasis containers that should allow us to transport
the samples safely back to the ship.
Sadar/Silveira:
Response
Imril: And how
are you planning to test the targeting array?
Gnai: Will the interference from the stellar radiation be of any concern with the testing? Or will that be determined in situ?
Sadar/Silveira: Response
Vailani: We'll need to adapt the shield resonance manually to compensate for the anomalous radiation.
Gnai: And… The study of the star, is that still set to proceed?
Sadar: Response
Silveira/Imril: Response
Gnai’s tendrils flashed.
Gnai: Thank you, sir. That’s
the primary reason this decided to volunteer for this survey in the first
place. It’s what this specialized in, at the Academy.
Kyle offered a reassuring smile to the Galadoran.
Morgan: Hopefully this mission doesn’t disappoint, then!
Sadar: Response
Vailani: :: eager :: Systems are
a go for launch. Ready when you are Lieutenant.
Silveira/Imril: Response
Sadar/Gnai: Response
The shuttle doors
closed over them, and the hum of the engines and other systems powering up
started to increase slightly in volume. The officers with more important tasks
started to oversee their launch sequence.
Vailani: The bridge has cleared
us for launch, lieutenant.
Morgan: You heard her, Vitor. Let’s get this show on the road.
Silveira/Imril: Response
Sadar/Gnai: Response
(OOC: Just catching up here so our leader can get us on with it ;)
