(( Lunaport, Luna ))
It was a strange feeling. Barely a few weeks ago, the entire sector was fighting for survival. Yet Lunaport's atmosphere did not reflect that at all—except for the fact that Ollie saw already his seventh security officer armed, lurking at the line of travelers slowly moving forward to the security checkpoint leading to the departure terminal. And he also needed to use civilian transport to get back to Earth, as all Starfleet traffic took priority in recovery operations.
Ollie grinned at the little human boy standing in line with his parents right before him. As the young ensign in his vibrant uniform caught the boy's fascination, his parents, lacking the same interest, gave Ollie an incredulous look as they nudged their child forward to the terminal security check. Ollie felt a bit uneasy about the lingering glances at his uniform that hinted at an intense but unspoken truth. The Dominion War, the attack on Mars, and now Frontier Day - some memories of these events were still too vivid to fade in just one human lifetime.
But there was no point in dwelling on it now, so Ollie checked the time on the wall. With only fifteen minutes left until boarding for his transport, he knew he was cutting it close, but he remained hopeful that he would make it on time.
(( Transport Room , Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))
A blue flash materialized into a figure, and Ensign Bergmen stepped off the transport platform with a smile on his face. As Ollie approached the NCO, who nodded at him while holding a datapad, he slung his duffel bag over his shoulder. The strap slowly started to dig into his shoulder as he did so.
Ral: Ensign Bermen, I suppose?
Ollie nodded eagerly.
Bergmen: Aye, ma’am. Permission to come aboard!
Chief Ral looked away from her PADD and raised her eyebrows slightly.
Ral: Permission granted..? Ensign.
Ral finished her note before she continued.
Ral: Your quarters are on deck four, sector fourteen, quarters… thirty three. As a new officer, you need to report to the captain before you report to your department head. If you ever get lost on the ship and can't find your quarters or any other areas, just make use of the LCARS information system available on every screen in the corridors. Do you understand everything?
Ollie nodded, and Ral shifted her gaze back to her PADD to bring up the profile of a new arrival. While reading the profile displayed on the screen, she couldn't shake the feeling that the ensign was still in her line of sight. They locked eyes, and an uneasy silence settled between them as the chief tried to understand why the ensign had not left yet.
Ral: Dismissed.
Bergmen: Aye, ma’am.
Bergmen moved to the side and exited the transporter room, with Ral's eyes tracking his departure. As the door slid shut, the Chief let out a sigh and shot a scolding grin at the transporter officer, who couldn't stifle a giggle.
(( Ready Room, Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))
Ollie paused to take a deep breath before stepping in front of the captain's ready room. He meticulously checked his uniform, smoothing every crease twice. After readjusting his rank pip and combadge, he still felt dissatisfied. The collar chafed against his neck, and Ollie couldn't shake the feeling that the uniform sleeves were too short, even though they were supposedly tailored precisely to fit him.
But he couldn't back out of it, so he went ahead and rang the bell to let the captain know he had arrived.
MacKenzie: Response
There really was no going back now. Ensign Bergmen stepped forward and proceeded to the captain's desk, where he stood at attention. His gaze briefly met the captain and the man standing beside her. Judging by his maroon uniform and the rank of Lieutenant Commander, Olli deduced from a vague recollection of the ship's roster he had reviewed during the journey from Luna to Earth that the man was likely Artemis' first officer, Talos Dakora.
Bergmen: Ensign Olliver Bergmen, Operations, reporting to duty, ma’am. ::turns to Dakora and nods:: Sir.
Ollie picked up the PADD with his transfer orders, tightly gripped it, and then set it down on the table in front of the captain.
