((Main Engineering, Deck 15 - USS Artemis-A))

Without the usual help of Lt. Cmdr. Salkath, Gnai had found another helping set of hands in Ens. Imril, who had brought it to a side room in Engineering, ready to help diagnose any issues with the suit that had cropped up since its last check-in with the department. Some of the dust and pollen had started to irritate the joints of the suit, to Gnai’s chagrin, which it had demonstrated to them.

Gnai: Let this know how it can help with diagnosis and repairs. You’re the expert here.

It opened the arms of its suit up wide, allowing Ens. Imril to inspect them with the holographic magnifying glass that they had called up.

oO What an odd affectation. Oo

Imril: Thanks. You can stand at ease. I see some scratches and shallow pitting in the joints and the metal surrounding them. Minor stuff, mostly. Definitely more in the legs, like you said. Some in the wrists and feet, just a little. They might have started giving you some trouble in time if we hadn’t caught it now.

That was a relief, then, to have caught it so early. A common worry that it had was for the suit to fail, especially after having to be carted around sans suit as it had been during Frontier Day.

Gnai: Thank you for the thorough inspection, this isn’t as able to check over the suit as much as this would prefer… ::pause:: Is this easily remedied? What course of action should be taken?

Imril: Here’s my plan. First, we wash the affected parts of the suit down in a weak acid, to neutralise the pollen residue. Then water to flush those metallic salts out. Then we dry everything off and run through those motions again, to see what gears still have issues. We replace those, and fill in the rest of the wear with targeted electroplating.

A few bobs in its tank signalled that Gnai agreed with the whole process.

Gnai: And this is something that can be accomplished here, in this room? Or will this have to come back another day…?

Imril: No need to walk into a tub or anything like that. I can use the holo-emitters here to create floating flow-channels for everything. Plumbing without the pipes. And you’ll be able to move the joints during the process, which is good because the fluids will need to contact every surface.

Gnai: Perfect!

Gnai’s tendrils and filaments glowed with appreciation, as it readied itself for the procedure. Ens. Imril was the expert in engineering here, so it waited as they tinkered with the controls for the holo-emitters and replicator systems.

Imril: Response

As things fizzled into existence in the room around Gnai and its tank, it watched intently, curious to see how Ens. Imril worked the holo-systems. It had spent some time in the Academy (and afterwards) tinkering with holos, and it wondered how they would approach things.

Gnai: This is ready to start, whenever you are.

Imril: Response

As the program ran, washing down the metal parts of its suit with the acid first, Gnai slowly forced the joints to move, exposing all the surfaces of the metal, as it pondered its (albeit short so far) journey through Starfleet, as well as the ensign’s (even shorter, and entirely unknown to it) one.

Gnai: Ensign, this hasn’t had the chance to get to know you much outside of missions. Are you interested in holo-programming outside of the context of engineering? For example, this spent a bit of time at the Academy learning how to holo-program for the purposes of entertainment.

Perhaps it was a bit of idle chatter, but Gnai had no desire to spend the entire time that this procedure took in silence.

Imril: Response
