((Geology Lab - Science Centre - USS Artemis-A))
As First Officer, it was her business to be nosey. She was an operations officer for many years and she also thought it was the duty of an ops officer to know everything that was going on with the ship. Now she had to not only know what was going on with the ship but also its crew. That also included the non-Starfleet officers. They had a fairly large contingent of enlisted, and a few civilians. Usually the civilian contingent worked in the recreation areas, such as Elysium. Sam Richards was part of the science team.
Ava considered civilians as vital to the operational efficiency of a ship as much as any other crew member.
Munro: I hope I'm not disturbing your experiment?
Ava craned her neck to have a good look at the experiment. Being nosey was her business … remember. Thankfully Sam didn't seem to mind.
Richards: No, no! Not at all. This is just a little something for fun.
Ava frowned in a show of good-natured confusion.
Munro: I suspect our idea of fun is vastly different.
As the scientist gestures behind her, Ava took several steps to get a better look at the equipment. You didn't spend a lifetime in Starfleet and not become familiar with the science department's equipment. Yet, she was no expert on what they actually did.
Munro: What am I looking at?
Richards: Oh, just some research swapping with some fellow scientists on 224. Asteroids and such.
She noticed that Sam had chosen not to overload her with the details - probably for the best. Geology was not her best suit. She got along well enough, if she needed to, but that was when duty called and … duty did not call at this moment. And it seemed Sam had taken mercy on her.
Munro: I'm sure it's fascinating. I'll take your word on that :: raises her hands in apology :: Which is a fault of mine.
Richards: So, you out just getting a feel for the ship before we head out again? How are things so far?
She appreciated the scientist's tact to offer her a get out.
Munro: Yes, I've been haunting the decks the last few days. I always think there's something unique about every starship that sets it apart from its sister ships. Have you ‘served’ on many ships?
Richards: Response
Munro: Amity? Isn't that the Delta Quadrant?
Richards: Response
Ava nodded and indicated Sam's bump. She was reminded of her own pregnancy, when she also served aboard a starship when she was a freshly graduated ensign. Not exactly the most ideal circumstances but it all worked out in the end. Just about. Roman had left her eventually, he was drawn to the deepest regions of space and the promise of adventure. She didn't hold him back, she urged him to go and she'd lost him to Starfleet. Not death but duty.
Of course, back then, she wasn't in a cool t-shirt. She had the classic grey shouldered uniform at the type and given a very unflattering tunic to wear. It was not the most comfortable months she'd ever spent, she could never get comfortable in that uniform. No matter how many alterations they made. The greatest minds of Starfleet could not fix a uniform.
Munro: My daughter was born on the Endeavour, and she's now in her first year at the Academy :: impish smile :: Where she was also conceived. She doesn't like me telling people that. So, you know, I tell as many people as I can. That's the true gift of motherhood, being a constant source of embarrassment to your children.
Richards: Response
