(( Elysium - Deck 5, USS Artemis-A ))
Oftentimes, Betazoids are known for their openmindedness. Nudity doesn’t bother them. They often hold significant relationships with multiple people at once. But for some Betazoids who were raised in traditional homes? Well … it’s complicated. Nudity still doesn’t bother them, but suggest that they should be allowed to be in different types of serious relationships - romantic, emotional, intellectual - with different people at the same time - all with their own benefits and drawbacks - for the Betazoid raised to strictly follow the staunchly traditional practices, black and white blurs to variations of grey. Part of Alex’s problem was that she was a very unsatisfied, staunchly traditional Betazoid. Which meant that Starflirt was both an intriguing and an appalling idea at the same time. Unsure of exactly what to do with this information or how to easily get out of the conversation, she asked what she hoped would be an innocuous question.
Storm: So, it’s like … ::gestures with her wine glass:: a dating service?
Alex didn’t need to be a Betazoid to know that the question was … not innocuous. She caught Nadevia’s lips pressed tightly together and the motion under the table as she crossed her legs.
It seemed a touchy subject.
Virtavi-Yaros: A most comprehensible supposition, though I must dispute its precision. While it is certainly true that the principal aim of Starflirt is to furnish a neutral and accommodating forum wherein members of Starfleet's various crews may form acquaintance regardless of their present station within the Quadrants, it would be a mistake to presume these connections are solely of a romantic nature. Indeed, among our users are many whose affections do not naturally incline toward romantic attachment - some by disposition, and others by choice. Moreover, it is not uncommon for officers to eschew deeper personal entanglements, persuaded - however erroneously - that the hazards of their calling render such intimacies too fraught with potential for heartbreak.
As she listened to Nadevia’s explanation, Alex took another sip of her wine. At this pace, it was going to be gone before the end of the conversation. She rated that a solid 5 on the problematic scale.
Storm: And you run this just aboard the Artemis? Or is this Starfleet-wide?
Virtavi-Yaros: Oh, by the Forebears, no! Pray do not mistake me - I do not preside over the enterprise. I am but a humble Representative, stationed upon the frontiers, tasked merely with facilitating correspondence between those desirous of such connections and the Starflirt establishment itself. As for the breadth of its reach, you are quite correct; our services extend to all who wear the uniform of Starfleet, even to those posted in the most distant and solitary corners of the galaxy. ::brief pause:: Though I confess, the vexing delay in correspondence to and from the Delta and Gamma Quadrants does present something of a challenge - one not so easily overcome, I daresay, even by the most determined of Flirters.
Alex caught her meaning, but as thoughts started swirling around in her head about whether or not this, seemingly delicate, woman could emotionally handle the trouble that comes to a starship.
Storm: Aren’t you ever worried about being on a starship that sees a good deal of action? As a civilian, aren’t you putting yourself unnecessarily at risk?
Was her question because she was genuinely concerned about this woman in front of her, or was it more to delay what she felt might be the inevitable end of this discourse, asking her if she was interested in StarFlirt? Alex wasn’t even sure of that answer herself.
Virtavi-Yaros: Your concern is most understandable, Lieutenant. Ah, do pardon me, I fear I quite overlooked the proper courtesies in my eagerness to speak of my profession. If I might inquire your name, and beg forgiveness for the delay with which I do so?
oO Yes, that will be the inevitable end to this conversation. Oo
Storm: I’m Alex Storm.
Virtavi-Yaros: The pleasure of making your acquaintance, Lieutenant Storm, is truly exquisite. As to your concerns, allow me to assure you that I feel perfectly secure aboard this most estimable vessel. The crew, if I may be so bold, ranks among the very finest in the Quadrant. And though there was, admittedly, a rather alarming episode most recently wherein the entire starboard side was exposed to the void, I have suffered no injury - save, perhaps, the occasional loss of a few bobs and baubles from my quarters.
Something about the statement about the fine crew allowed her to breathe a little more freely. While Alex knew Sil, she didn’t know much of anyone else yet. It was good to hear an outsider’s take on the distinct quality of the crew.
Storm: And bobs and baubles can usually be replaced without immense difficulty as long as they aren’t family heirlooms.
Virtavi-Yaros: Response
oO Maybe this is the best time to turn the conversation. Let’s rip the bandaid off. Oo
Storm: While I am sure that some people would find this concept of needed connection helpful. I should to tell you that I’m married and don’t currently find myself in need of your services.
Virtavi-Yaros: Response
Storm: But being new on the ship, as you earlier surmised, I am open to making acquaintances, eventually even to making good friends. Everyone needs those - real connections - don’t you think?
Virtavi-Yaros: Response
