((Elysium Main Level - Deck 6 - USS Artemis-A))

It was true that Ava preferred the company of others, always had. Even as a child, she was eager to escape loneliness. Being an only child of two parents that valued work above all else meant that she was taught to be self reliant from a young age. She had learnt to work hard but unlike her mother she didn't enjoy the solitude of an arboretum. Hours spent pruning and shearing plants, and splicing species together in controlled environments.

She had begged for siblings. Yet her mother would declare that she had neither the inclination or time for another child. ‘My heart is already full of love for you’ she would say with a casual kiss on the forehead. Her dreams of a sibling to explore the forest or go on adventures disappeared with each passing year.

Ava, never one to accept the deck the fates had given her, began to recruit the colony children for her adventure. Eventually they had a gang that dubbed themselves The Ferals which was also what Ava's father called them when the troupe of children would emerge from the forest, covered in dirt with branches and leaves in their hair.

She didn't like to be on her own. This was a notion that followed her into adulthood and why she still ate in public, or invited guests to her quarters for meals. One reason she had a fully equipped kitchen installed - or she would have once there were walls.

Partly why she had invited the ensign for lunch, and it was a pleasant after effects that she happened to be in good company.

Another waiter approached, balancing several plates. Instinctively her stomach rumbled. Suzie rushed out from under the table where she had been resting and yelped at the server.

Munro: Finally, I'm starved :: to Suzie :: Calm.

The dog immediately sat down. Suzie was always extremely food motivated, considering she was such a small dog Ava really wasn't sure where she put most of the food she consumed.

Cole: I had barely eaten anything this morning, so I can relate.

Munro: If only ensigns were so easy to train :: winks mischievously ::

Cole: ::feigning innocence:: I’m sure we’re a delight. Right after the caffeine kicks in and the panic wears off.

As the ensign tucked into her food, Ava looked at her own. A salad of spiced vegetables, roots and cheese.

Munro: The panic wears off? Good luck with that.

She mixed the layers of the salad together, pouring the sauce over the top as she folded it in.

Cole: What was your first mission like as a junior officer?

Munro: Boring. I think it was a supply run and I was sent along to inventory all the containers. It was as dull as it sounds. Not exactly the excitement you had?

She noticed that the ensigns attention had fallen on Suzie, who was seated, her light brown eyes fixed on her target. Like a fluffy Ferengi about to broker a deal. The head tilt a common tactic.

Cole: ::looking at Suzie:: You have to ask your Mom, she’s the boss here.

Munro: She knows she doesn't get to eat when we eat.

Suzie whimpered and lowered herself down, with a huff she placed her head onto her paws.

Cole: Response

Munro: Trust me it's better this way. Suzie can be stubborn when it comes to food. There was a time when I couldn't even take her into a restaurant.

Ava took a bite of her meal, the flavours were really good and let them rest on her taste buds for a few seconds before she gently chewed whilst listening to Cole.

Cole: Response

She swallowed her food down and dabbed at her mouth with a napkin. That was Aunt Christie's influence.

Munro: So, I know all about why you joined Starfleet. What do you do for fun? Must be an ensign hot spot around here?

Cole: Response
