((Ready Room - Deck 1 - USS Artemis-A))

No one was more surprised about the development of this meeting with MacKenzie than Ava herself. She had been summoned to the Ready Room, given a dressing down and then promoted within a few minutes.

After putting the pip on she looked to the CO.

Munro: :: jokes :: It feels heavier already. I assume this means I have more work to do?

MacKenzie: Oh, you have no idea.

In a moment of sincerity, Ava directed her focus to MacKenzie.

Munro: Captain, I know we haven't known each other that long but I want you to know I appreciate everything that you do, and all of your help. Don't worry I won't get too soppy, I just wanted you to know that. It doesn't go unnoticed how much you do.

As the redheaded Fleet Captain grimaced and spotted the air in front of her, Ava let the whisper of a smile creep on her face.

When MacKenzie pointed to the pips on her own collar.

MacKenzie: ::flatly:: Part of the job.

Munro: You've set a good example for me.

MacKenzie: Well, I don't know if I'd go that far... Many of the junior officers think I airlock disobedient officers for sport, which I'm not sure if quite the reputation you should seek to emulate...

Munro: A formidable reputation isn't necessarily a bad thing. Ensign productivity is up by 7%. Who's to say that isn't because of some unspoken fear of being airlocked?

MacKenzie: So, do you feel the weight of the galaxy on your shoulders yet?

Munro: Not yet, I can't hardly believe it.

The captain leaned forward and grinned.

MacKenzie: That's because you haven't seen the PADDwork waiting for you on your desk. Welcome to the club.

Munro: More PADDwork that's all I needed.

MacKenzie: Response

Ava nodded towards her.

Munro: Again, thank you Captain. I better get to that ever growing pile of PADDs :: beat ::

Before the Captain could call her back Ava vacated the Captain's Ready Room at pace.

((Turbolift - USS Artemis-A))

Once she found herself in the privacy of the turbolift, she breathed a sigh of relief. In one second it was like she had been released from a grip that she didn't know was clasped around her throat. The weight of an entire crew, their safety and lives at the mercy of one bad decision. That was now the task of MacKenzie again.

Then, the understanding of what it is to be Commander lay it's invisible fist upon her. A new set of duties and responsibilities. The burden of command, and that was not lost on her.

It was more than Starfleet. It was the crew, their lives, and the ones that they loved that relied on her to make sure that one day when the mission was over they returned to them. An invisible promise that snaked its way through time and space.

Don't let them die.
