(( Captain’s Ready Room - Deck 1, USS Artemis-A))

The crew of the Artemis had been assigned a temporary officer – a doctor from the Ronin by the name of Syrex. The assignment had come as a bit of a surprise – they weren’t in need of another doctor, what with Adea, Morgan, and Sadar keeping track of things – let alone one whose visit was of a limited nature. What was clear was that the officer had asked for the posting, so it was obviously in her best interest as the ship’s captain to figure out exactly what drove the request. Not one to beat around the bush, MacKenzie got right to the point.

MacKenzie: Why are you here?

The question clearly took the officer by surprise.

Syrex: I’m sorry, Ma’am?

Addison tossed the PADD down on her desk, making the same clinking sound as it landed on the workspace’s surface next to the PADD she had been reading earlier. Clasping her hands, she rested them on the desktop and leaned forward.

MacKenzie: This appears to be a voluntary transfer request, not one mandated by Starfleet Command. So, why are you here?

Syrex: Frankly, I needed a holiday. I saw you were in orbit of Risa. But the think is I get bored when relaxing. I like to keep myself occupied. So, I applied for a transfer here to help you all out.

Addison’s eyes narrowed as she sat back in her chair, her palms resting in her lap.

MacKenzie: Are you not satisfied with your time on the Ronin?

Syrex: No, of course not. Ronin Strong! ::flexes her arm muscles:: Ma’am…

Her brow furrowed slightly.

MacKenzie: Are you familiar with Captain Niac’s service record?

Syrex: Only the important parts, Ma’am.

MacKenzie: And are you aware of the fact that he served under me on the Excalibur?

Syrex: Errmm.. No.

Syrex: …Ma’am

She once again leaned forward, resting her arms on the desk.

MacKenzie: And what do you suppose he might say if I were to inquire about you and your service on the Ronin?

Syrex: Well, If I’m honest, I wouldn’t want to speculate on that. If you would like to know what he’d say, you’d have to talk to him.

She offered a bit of a devious smirk, akin to the Cheshire Cat goading Alice.

MacKenzie: I just might. (beat) Still, I’m curious what you think his overall impression of you might be.

The junior doctor adjusted her uniform, clearing her throat.

Syrex: Well… Before I left the Ronin, I was promoted. So, I would assume mostly positive feedback. I would hope for mostly positive.

MacKenzie: Mostly. Positive. I’m sure. According to your service record, you just lost an eye?

A hard pivot, if nothing else.

Syrex: I did lose my eye; that’s something that happened. My mentor back home lost his arm, when he was under your command if I remember correctly. I hope that the Artemis offers, if anything the environment in which I can remain intact if I’m honest with you. I doubt Karrod would be happy if you sent me back as a pile of dust.

The devious smile returned to her face.

MacKenzie: I’m sure Captain Niac would know that if I did send you back to him in a tiny box, I’d have had a very good reason for it.

Syrex: Response

She leaned back in her chair, tiring of this line of inquiry. Instead, she’d decided to tie in several of the doctor’s previous answers.

MacKenzie: So, I’ll ask you again, Doctor: why are you here? Do you not like vacations? Do you not think you’ve earned one? Why come all this way to one of the most beautiful places in the galaxy only to work more?

Syrex: Response

Her brow once again furrowed, this time so much that her eyebrows nearly met in the center of her forehead.

MacKenzie: And would you say that you’ve completed an appropriate amount of counseling after the loss of your eye?

In her mind, it was a valid question. As a doctor who specialized in artificial implants, she’d dealt with many officers who’d lost limbs, many of whom had varying levels of difficulty adjusting to their new reality. To introduce a new officer to the mix who had yet to sufficiently process her loss could be a detriment to the Artemis.

Syrex: Response
