K’Wara: There we go.
Tamio would be lying if they claimed they didn’t take some satisfaction in the flabbergasted expression of the Ensign next to them. Tamio had attended countless nomadic galleries in their time and seen pretty much every single possible way of revealing the artworks upon the designated time, right from ‘they’re being painted as you watch them’ to ‘a giant trained spacewhale vomits it out’. The usage of holo-emitters to project the illusion of the ordinary until the moment of unveiling was not as messy, but just as dramatic, and they watched D’tin as her eyes seemed to struggle to decide where to look first.
K’Wara: Well. What do you want to see first?
That seemed to get her attention.
Breys: You’re letting me pick? This is your art show.
K’Wara: Oh, it’s hardly mine. I’m a spectator, just as you, only more experienced. I’d be a poor.. ::reconsiders word choice:: companion, if I didn’t let you make your pick.
Tamio would end up seeing all of it anyway, but it said much of a person what kind of art they gravitated towards. Tamio would’ve likely headed straight for the sculptures, given this was their own artistic vocation, but the curiosity to see where D’tin’s primary interest lied was too strong.
Her excitement when she found it was palpable.
Breys: What about that?
Tamio looked in the indicated direction, and a wide toothy smile appeared on their face as the pair started walking.
K’Wara: Of course.
oO Leave it to her to find a way to make this about plants regardless. Oo
Though these plants had precious little to do with her research in Hydroponics, so Tamio had few qualms about entertaining her very singularly focused field of interest. The crystal vases that housed the floral multitudes were art pieces in and of themselves, colors and vibrant patterns galore, but from the signage at the edge of the exhibition, Tamio tempered their expectations.
This was no ordinary exhibition piece of elaborate vases and beautiful floral arrangements, though it could very well have been. This was an exhibition arena labelled ‘Scent of Memory’, and upon approaching the very first table, Tamio realized why.
Breys: What does this smell like to you, sir?
Tamio leaned forward slightly, though mostly out of automatic response rather than need, as the exhibition seemed built in a very deliberate way to carry scents in the area around each floral piece.
For a brief moment, they were transported to that precarious moment before the words ‘Computer, start the scenario’ were uttered, where the scent of uniforms-barely-worn mixed with nervous sweat and the familiar sterility of a Holodeck being slowly pushed away by the static in the air as the computer started manipulating the particles in the air around them.
K’Wara: ... That is... Unique.
Breys: I think it’s either supposed to smell like learning, or stress. ::she pauses:: Or I don't get it.
Tamio considered that suggestion for a moment, though they figured if ‘stress’ was the primary motivator, then the arrangement ought to have smelled more like wet stone and starvation.
But then, stress had many varied expressions.
K’Wara: ::considers:: I think ‘learning’ may be a very good descriptor for it. Does the scent remind you of anything in particular?
Breys: Response
It hadn’t struck Taimo, in their years of teaching, that the word ‘Academy’ could bring up a specific scent, but considering their conversation partner, it was perhaps not too surprising.
K’Wara: That makes sense, given how recent that is for you. Did you enjoy yourself?
Breys: Response
K’Wara: Like the Holodeck during a Final Exam. There’s something entirely unique about that experience, it’s quite impressive that they managed to pack that into a sensory experience.
They had no doubt that D’tin would be able to break down the actual process or methodology used if they tasked her, but that would lead the conversation too far into research territory, and given that they’d specifically ordered her to relax, they decided to leave that specific line of inquiry for a later time.
Breys: Response
K’Wara: I used to be an instructor at the Academy before I got posted here. I still conduct exams every now and then, though I don’t teach classes anymore. ::leads D’tin to the next vase and sniffs:: Ah... This is a much sweeter scent.
Breys: Response
