(( Captain’s Ready Room - Deck 1, Artemis-A ))

As Alex stepped inside the Ready Room, she wasn’t ready for the wave of emotion that hit her.  The Captain obviously had something serious on her mind.  Upon that realization though, Alex completely closed off her mind.  It wasn’t her business.

Storm:  Lieutenant Storm reporting as ordered, Captain.

MacKenzie: At ease, Lieutenant.

Alex relaxed and clasped her hands behind her back, since she wasn’t invited to sit - which she preferred not to do anyway.

Storm:  Yes, Sir.  Thank you for taking the time to meet with me.

MacKenzie: No trouble at all. Welcoming new crew members aboard is one of the things I enjoy most. ::referencing the PADD:: I see here that you’ll be filling our vacancy in the tactical department?

Storm: Yes, Sir.

MacKenzie: Very good. Any particular reason you applied for the position?

Alex thought for a moment.  She would be truthful as always, but truth came in various shades, and she needed to find the right one.

Storm:  I needed a change of pace.

Simple, straightforward, and truthful while leaving out the less pleasant bits.

The Captain didn’t seem overly concerned with her answer, which allowed Alex’s shoulders to lose a little of their tightness.

MacKenzie: I see. Have you familiarized yourself with the Borderlands? We have some unique astronomical phenomena that can make things pretty tricky.

Storm:  Yes, Sir.  I took time to read through the information available on the LCARS on my way to DS224.  Several nebulas, the badlands, some pirate activity, some Klingon activity,  even the Son’a R’ongovian Protectorate, among others.  Sounds like there will never be a dull moment.

Alex had her emotional issues, but she had always stayed well on top of her job.  Reading up on the Borderlands, the Artemis itself, and her command staff was a part of being ready to do her best at her job, and it really was her job that kept her going, kept her pushing herelf, kept her on the necessary the path to precision.

MacKenzie: And have you had the chance to meet with our Tactical Chief Lieutenant Silveira yet?

An unconscious smile graced her face for a split second before evaporating into the ether.

Storm:  If you’ll forgive me the familiarity, Sir.  Sil and I are old friends.  Though I was unaware of his posting here when I asked for the transfer.

MacKenzie: Response

Storm:  I think it will be helpful to serve under him.  That sense of really belonging to a ship and trusting its officers often takes a while.  But I believe that coming into a situation knowing my superior and already trusting him implicitly will help expedite that sense of belonging and instant action.

MacKenzie: Response

Alex understood where the Captain was coming from, and maybe the question was a test, but either way she knew her answer.

Storm: For a good officer, following orders is immediate upon taking any position, but trust still has to be earned.  It’s the difference between an unplanned split-second delay and an instantaneous action.  Both are following orders.  One does so successfully, Sir.

MacKenzie: Response
