to USS Artemis-A – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
(( Science Lab 3, Deck 9 - USS Artemis-A ))
As requested by Doctor Morgan, ValhJeahn had joined the gathered officers in one of the Artemis laboratories.
They smiled and took a seat, reaching up the PADD.
ValhJeahn: We use some crystals to help. But we were never able to fully understand their effects, and what was our abilities and what was not.
Richards: ::Pointing to Lieutenant Morgan:: I told you it was more than “just a rock”.
Scientist Richards appeared to consider that a point to have with Doctor Morgan, but after speaking she shrugged apologetically.
Lieutenant Imril gave her an assuring smile.
Doctor Morgan just made a face and shrugged.
ValhJeahn had the same feeling as before and he tried to patiently explain, again, why they were so oblivious.
ValhJeahn: The Boraxians do not allow us to study these things. Most of the things we do are by instinct, occurring naturally. We were never give the chance to learn…
Until we left…
Richards: ValhJean, may I ask you a few things about the crystals you referred to? If you check that PADD there, it contains some images and scans. Is that the same type of crystal?
ValhJeahn noticed that Lieutenant Imril remained quiet as they looked at the PADD searching for the images. They nodded
ValhJeahn: Yes, these are our Cristals
Scientist Richards nodded slowly.
Richards: Can you tell me exactly what they do? Any information you have about it could be helpful to us. Even the small details, they might mean something.
ValhJean nodded and leaned back as he explained.
ValhJean: We either use one or two of them, depending on how, or what we are doing. We have a ritual to help smooth down and heal our people. Mostly to make them comfortable.
But the proper effect of the crystals is still… ::ValhJeahn shrugged with all their arms:: A little unknown to us.
That is why we Yurum are so sheltered and revered...
ValhJean chose not to continue as that would enter into their struggle to be recognized as full citizens and how they wished to do other things.
Scientist Richards was taking down their replies.
Richards: Are these native to your world? Are they a plentiful resource? I’m sorry for so many questions. This is really important.
ValhJean smiled and nodded
ValhJean: I understand. We have an ample supply of them on the Spire.
Lieutenant Imril chose to join the conversation.
Imril: Are you limited to crystals taken from your homeworld, or can they be produced elsewhere?
ValhJean frowned slightly in surprise. They didn’t really have a world, at least not anymore.
ValhJean: We don’t have a home planet. Our legends tell of Ellet, our home planet but we had left it behind ages ago. From what I can tell the crystals are extracted and converted for our purpose, as we travel the stars.
Richards: Response
Imril: Do the crystals become less effective over time, or with extended use?
ValhJeahn nodded. They still kept the old ones, more of a memory. In fact ValhJeahn still had a little piece from the First Cristal they used, in a necklace on his quarters in New Hope.
ValhJeahn: Yes, again depending on the size and the use we give them.
Richards: Response
Imril: If you yourself don’t know what effect one of these crystals has on your abilities, then perhaps a demonstration of how you use the two together is in order? We could all learn something.
Doctor Morgan, who was quietly listening, chose to speak in support of the suggestion of Lieutenant Imril.
Morgan: I agree. What we’re able to learn about this crystal, as well as the samples we took from the medical lab may prove valuable. Without any records of what this crystal is, or what they were doing with those samples, we’re going to have to do what we can to figure out their purpose.
They weren’t exactly expecting that, but the offer was tempting. And learning how their abilities truly worked would certainly be an advantage for the Yurum.
ValhJeahn: If that is the way for us to learn I am willing to help.
Richards: Response
Morgan: I’m wondering if you think the lab is a suitable place, or if we should recreate the Boraxian medical lab on the holodeck?
ValhJeahn: For a healing session we should have proper illumination. Our lights are special as you likely learned.
Richards: Response
Doctor Morgan shrugged.
Morgan: It could also give us some insight about the effects their lights have on our people… Could be the biggest bang for our buck.
ValhJeahn nodded and looked around them.
ValhJeahn: I can just perform a calming ritual. It helps ease the mind, although I am not sure how it might work on your species.
Morgan/Imril/Richards: Response
ValhJeahn took a cristal from the pocket under his robes. Setting it in their lower hands he opened his upper arms.
ValhJeahn: Let’s give it a try. ::They closed their eyes:: If anyone feels any discomfort please let me know.
Morgan/Imril/Richards: Response
ValhJeahn concentrated and opened up their mind. They had performed the Ritual enough times to be sure it worked. Still with their eyes closed they hummed softly and slowly opened them, as their upper hands joined slowly in front of their chest, in what looked like a praying gesture.
They conveyed the inner peace they were feeling, as the cristal began to feel warm. They smiled gently at each one of them, smoothly.
ValhJeahn: Let your mind breath slowly and wash away your concerns.
Morgan/Imril/Richards: Response
