(( Captain’s Ready Room – Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))
Sitting in front of Captain MacKenzie still felt sort of surreal to Sam. After months of trying to put Frontier Day behind her, there she was mixing herself into the people she spent that life changing day with.
MacKenzie: So what are you doing on this side of the galaxy? Deep Space 224 is hardly a destination hotspot, nevermind the Borderlands…
She averted her gaze off of MacKenzie, as it set in that she was going to be reuniting with so many people from such a difficult time.
S. Richards: When I heard this is where you were going to be I figured it was a good chance to reconnect with people from Frontier Day, and the timing felt right. I have a lot of questions to ask and thanks to give. ::relaxing back into the chair:: I discovered a lot about myself over that time, but I think there’s more to it. ::shrugging:: Call it some soul searching I guess.
MacKenzie: Well, the thing about Starfleet is that you often end up facing death or other moral quandaries that make you question what you thought you believed…
S. Richards: Since I'm here I will start with you…
Shifting in the chair, she hoped she wasn’t being too forward with the Captain she had only met once before.
MacKenzie: Oh?
S. Richards: I just wanted to tell you thank you. You were able to keep a level head in the Cube when some of us were clearly unable to. You had a big hand in keeping all of us alive. The way you helped lead us through left a mark on me. Because of you and some of your crew, I’m still here.
Mackenzie shrugged, giving Sam the impression the Captain was one of the more humble Starfleet Officers.
MacKenzie: I’m the captain. That’s my job. Years of decision making – good and bad – help shape how future situations are handled.
S. Richards: Captain or not, you were a pivotal person on that day for me ::grimacing a bit:: As a part of the civilian contingent, I am wrapped up in Starfleet, but I don’t have the same skills as the officers do. I’m not sure how you Starfleeters can handle that kind of pressure all the time.
MacKenzie: Well that’s the problem – you have to be able to fall back on your training, because once the adrenaline starts flowing, you can’t afford to fall back entirely on your instinct alone or you’re dead.
A nod of understanding was all Sam could offer.
S. Richards: Either way, thank you again.
MacKenzie: You’re welcome.
With a smile, Sam stood up and offered a handshake to the Captain.
S. Richards: I’m sure you will be seeing more of me during my stay.
MacKenzie: Response
She gave another friendly smile.
S. Richards: ::Pointing to the bottle of wine:: If you need someone to help you drink that, come find me.
MacKenzie: Response
As she started to prepare to leave the Captain back to her work, Sam suddenly turned around to ask a quick question before making her exit.
S. Richards: You don’t happen to know where I can find your First Officer do you?
MacKenzie: Response
