((OOC: Sorry for the delay. Getting back in the saddle after the Holiday weekend was a challenge.))

((Conference Room - Deck 01 - USS Artemis-A))

Talos sat across the table from the Artemis' newest addition. The Napean helm officer’s arrival had been rather timely, considering how thin their tanks had gotten following the Frontier Day disaster.

Dakora: We’re glad to have you aboard, especially after our last pilot… ::He caught himself and chose a different tack.:: Well, We’re just glad to have you aboard.

He has the distinct impression that his lack of subtlety hadn't gone unnoticed.

Tyron: ::Giving a nervous smile:: Yes, Sir. :: Shifting in his seat a bit :: They said this posting came up... :: Looking down and letting that hang there for a second or two as he searched for the right word.:: unexpectedly.

A sort of brief darkness passed over the man's face and just as quickly it had passed.

Tyron: ::Looking at the two officers:: I am sorry for the crew loses. You must have been close to them. ::Looking down at his hands.:: Being in a command position when people die would not be an easy thing. I hope...

The Ensign trailed off as he seemed to stare up at Talos and Addison with a peculiar expression.

Talos gave a slow nod.

Dakora: It's not. But that's a subject for another time, I think.

Just as things were dangling on the precipice of awkwardness, Addison pulled the conversation back on track.

MacKenzie: Tell me about your background, Ensign. ::holding up the PADD:: I’m talking about the things I won’t learn by reading your formal bio.

The Helm Officer seemed a bit tentative but responded anyway.

Tyron: I have come to enjoy some of the aspects of mind 20th century earth, particularly a region called Appalachia. I am a cousin (in the holodeck) to a man named Junior Johnson ::Picking up a bit of a 1940’s Appalachian accent:: we modify car engines to get more power and speed out of them. ::Blushing a bit:: Then we try to deliver moonshine to cities around the south. We end up running from the police through the Appalachian Mountains and the foothills. : Pausing for a moment and looking at the Captain:: I admit some aspects of earth history from that time that do not make sense to me. ::Pausing again for a moment:: I have learned to play banjo and fiddle, and have taken part in some strange ritual events called barn dances ::Dropping the accent:: but I am not sure any of these are useful. I also like cherry pie and blueberry pancakes.

Talos’ eyebrows raised as Ensign revealed more of his strange holographic hobbies. He’d considered himself woefully Terranized for a Betazoid with his affinity for surfing and whiskey, but Tyron had seemingly taken it to another level.

The Napean continued.

Tyron: Just so you know, I do not drink. I am told moonshine tastes a bit better than gasoline and has the kick of a mule. I am not sure why anyone would do that.

MacKenzie shifted in her chair a little and Talos couldn't help but crack a wry smirk. Whatever she'd been expecting, this clearly was not it.

Though, Talos would be lying if he said he wasn't the slightest bit interested in trying this… moonshine.

MacKenzie: And what about your interest in the helm position?

Ensign Tyron smiled, a bit nervously.

Tyron: I spent most my life on a planet watching an atmosphere develop, from seeing millions of stars to seeing fewer, from baren ground to fertile soil, and to watching clouds form and rain falling. I know more about different types of algae, waste and water reclamation, carbon filtration, plant growth, and hydroponics than any boy should ever know. My parents may terraform two or three planets in their lifetime, but there is a lot to see and experience.

He felt MacKenzie's rising ire at the Ensign's unconventional responses and she made a gesture that seemed to say “do you want to try?”

Talos was less concerned with apparently quirky personality, and more concerned by whether or not he could do the job. At the end of the day, that was what truly mattered.

Dakora: All very interesting and thought provoking points, Ensign Tyron. ::His gaze flashed in MacKenzie's direction momentarily.:: but for now, let's focus on your duties as the Artemis’ newest helm officer.

Tyron: I know with everything going on, there is a lot of crew taking leave and helping out. I would like to start earning my keep, can I help in any way or are there things you would like me to start learning? Specific tests or simulations for the helm and navigation systems that you would like me to participate in? Are there any updates to the astrogation charts or star maps that I should review before the ship returns to active duty?

Talos cocked his head slightly, an amused expression playing across his face. At least this time the Ensign's head was nearly in the right place.

That said, he could feel a storm brewing in the hot-tempered Captain in the chair beside him

MacKenzie: Ensign, I’m not sure your answers satisfied my earlier questions. I asked you about your background, you told me about your fascination with a holodeck program. I asked you about your interest in the helm, and you told me about your parents’ experiences with terraforming… So, let’s revisit the first question, perhaps in a more pointed way. What got you interested in Starfleet?

Her words were delivered in a tone that he had become all too familiar with in the years he'd served with Addison Mackenzie. It was a tone that demanded compliance, or else. Thus far he hadn't met anyone crazy or brave enough to find out what the else meant.

Tyron: Response

Talos settled back in his high-backed chair and rubbed his chin as he listened to the response.

Dakora: Now we're getting somewhere…

MacKenzie: And what do you know of the Artemis so far?

Tyron: Responses

He had always wondered if the Artemis had gained any notoriety (or, perhaps, infamy) for all of the crazy missions they'd experienced in the past couple of years underway.

Dakora: She's a good ship, with great crew. We treat her right, she'll treat us right. You can count on that.

Tyron/MacKenzie: Response

Talos checked his wrist chronograph, knowing that he was due below decks to survey some repairs soon.

When he spoke he met the Ensign's gaze.

Dakora: Oh and Mister Tyron, make sure you get your medical check in done sooner rather than later. Doctor Adea can get a little prickly if he has to chase you down.

Tyron/MacKenzie: Response
