Maybe it was a common thing for other ensigns, to have aspirations for the higher ranks in the fleet, but whenever Gnai thought about its own career in Starfleet, it didn’t see much reason to rush into responsibilities. As Cmdr. Adea - wait, no, Genkos had said, there was plenty of room to develop as an ensign. Gnai wasn’t sure how to feel about referring to the CMO by his first name yet; it had gotten used to simply thinking of him as Adea. But if that was what he wanted, that was what Gnai would call him.
Gnai: ~ As an ensign, there's far more time to focus on science, rather than the administrative tasks that it seems more senior members have to worry about. ~
Genkos nodded and gave out a little laugh, and Gnai lit up. This was a good sign. It didn’t want to seem like it was shirking responsibility, of course, but that was a good reason why it was enjoying being an ensign as much as it did. No one came rushing to it to set up schedules or deal with PADDwork. All anyone wanted it to do was science. Well. That’s what was supposed to happen. The mission seemed to prove that expectation completely wrong. But in the calmer time between missions, all anyone wanted it to do was science.
Adea: ~ You are not wrong, Gnai. I am often up to my eyeballs in PADDwork. I think since I made CMO, I have done less and less actual doctoring every year. ~
Gnai: ~ Do you miss being a doctor? ~
Genkos brushed away a leaf with his cane. Gnai had put two and two together to come up with four - he needed that as much as Gnai needed its suit, and that was all that it needed to know. Anything further seemed rude to wonder about, so it didn’t.
Adea: ~ I do miss it, really, I don’t get to do as much as I would like. But I can always insist on doing SOME doctoring, I just never have the time; ~
Gnai: ~ What’s it like being a doctor? The Academy only covered… basics. ~
Not that Gnai had paid much attention to them, bored out of its mind as a first-year. Back then, it hadn’t seen the point in learning about humanoids and their biology. It still didn’t know much now about the whole subject, perhaps to its detriment.
Adea: ~ Response ~
As Genkos spoke, Gnai bobbed along politely. What a strange job to have.
Gnai: ~ Interesting. On Galador II, there isn’t much need for doctors anymore. ~
Such a fact wasn’t odd to Gnai, but it was sure that to a doctor, it might sound backwards.
Adea: ~ Response ~
Gnai: ~ I ::whole:: have no threats within my ::whole:: cities. And I ::partial:: am identical to every part of myself ::whole::; there is no genetic disease. ~
Barring the odd random mutation, of course.
Adea: ~ Response ~
