Nat’s proposal struck a chord.
No, not just a chord, it struck the full orchestra.
The memory of their encounter with the alter universe counterparts still hurt. The old expression “time heals all” wasn’t that accurate.
It never fully healed, one just handled it better.

Vitor leaned back, this was a work meeting. Granted Alex was a close friend. Nat was getting there. Hell, they were, like all his comrades, family.
But he was their superior and that implied a little more responsibility, and the ability to control emotions and provide proper instructions.

And maybe not start an impromptu counseling session over what was one of the defining events in your life.

Silveira: Look it was complicated and I don’t want to go into that. Lieutenant Cole I am not shutting down your proposal because it brings back trauma to some of us. My command style and I will dare say it’s quality derives from that. ::he tensed slightly and straightened himself:: Commanding by example and through experience. ::his forehead frowned as he spoke:: Years and years of experience facing Q, doppelgangers from other universes, Klingon, Ferengi, Iconians, Suliban, Borg…
That’s why I know holding a cricket in your boots can go pretty bad and start a diplomatic incident that takes months to solve. That’s why I know we all risk too much and we need to be more careful and have some sort of safety course…

He shrugged and leaned back, trying to force a smile.

Silveira: Sorry, I didn’t meant to lecture any of you… Just some dark memories that passed my eyes…

Alex nodded at him and offered a half-smile before replying.

Storm:  Damn funny things, memories.  They can be quite a two-edged sword, huh?

Cole: ::nodding:: Often they can remind us of things we could have done, or remind us of what we did right.

He was glad they both understood. Alex moved on pushing them back to the core of the meeting.

Storm:  Okay.  So, short-term, you want us to work on a threat assessment.  My only question on that is you said you want us to bring medical and counseling in on that.  How does that work with annual physicals and psych evals?  Do we just use those, or do we need to double down on those even if one was just done?

Cole: ::to Alex:: That gives me an idea, I’ll explain later.

Vitor shook his head and hands. That was taking it a little further than he had thought.

Silveira: No, they aren’t self-excluding. Physicals and psych evaluations will continue as demanded and usual ::He raised his finger in the air:: and that is also a reminder that we all should keep them and I want you both to go and do them if you haven’t.
My intention on bringing in the Medical department is to provide guidance and orientation to that course. As I said, it's not just Security it’s also Safety.

Storm:  Okay.  We’ll make sure we loop that into our planning.  Once that’s completed, you want us to finalize the ship-wide training scenario, making sure that we include a space battle as a part of it.  Will this be carried out shipwide or on the holodeck?  If it’s shipwide and we’re using doppelgangers, that might prove more difficult.  Could we use a holodeck on DS 224 and run it in cycles until we get the entire crew through?

Cole: If we’re limited to the ship, we could see if Commander Jovenan would allow us the use of her TOV unit. That gives us a way to evaluate space combat decision-making without compromising the rest of the drill. ::beat:: Strictly with her permission, of course.

Vitor leaned slightly back as he considered the answer.

Silveira: Let that open so we can decide. I would prefer we do it on the ship and out of the station. Last time we had the Berlin with half of the crew as OPFOR and the rest remained on the Artemis and we fought on a Nebulae…. ::Vitor rolled his eyes:: I was thinking just space will be good for that one.

They took some notes on their PADDs

Storm:  You’ve given us both quite an assignment, Commander.  But I think we’re both up to the task and make a good team.

Cole: We do. Alex and I approach things a little differently, which honestly makes me trust the end result more. If we’re building something for the crew, I’d rather it come from more than one way of thinking.

Vitor knew of the camaraderie between them, and he trusted both. If he didn’t he wouldn’t have summoned them.

Silveira: I know, that’s why I am handing this to you both. I have every confidence in either of you and know neither will let me down.

Storm: Response

Cole: I think with that in mind the risk assessment could tell us a lot, not just where people are vulnerable, but where Security and Tactical may be assuming readiness instead of building it.

Vitor raised an eyebrow, not sure what Nat meant by that.

Silveira: Sorry I think you lost me there…

Storm: Response

Cole: If we’re doing this right, it should show us where our readiness actually is, not where we assume it is.

Now that made more sense.

Silveira: OK now I got it, yes very valid point.

Storm: Response

Still he felt he should reiterate his intentions.

Silveira: But remember to keep a component regarding our own risk assessment. I know we all tend to be a little… ::he didn’t want to use the word reckless, so he tried to find a better suited synonym:: audacious. I want us all to work on that.

Storm/Cole: Response

Vitor tilted his head, he had checked everything he had planned to talk to them about. Drill, risk assessment, hidden toys…
He wondered if he should reiterate some of what he said, but he was fairly certain they got the message. He recalled Nat mentioning an idea so he turned to her.

Silveira: You mentioned you had an idea when Lieutenant Storm was asking about the medical part? Care to share it?

Storm/Cole: Response

Vitor tipped his head.

Silveira: Interesting…

Storm/Cole: Response
