Solas avoided eye contact with the counselor, keeping his eyes on the floor and anywhere else. She cocked her head, furrowing wrinkles into her forehead as she scanned him up and down, trying to read his body language.
Kel: I don’t know if I see it that way counselor. I mean if my willpower was really that strong, wouldn’t I have been able to throw it off completely? Not been a risk to anyone?
Vhysa’lia: ::shaking her head:: The Borg have been perfecting their assimilation for centuries; it’s not your fault that you eventually succumbed to it. What matters is those few seconds that you gave your crewmates, holding on as long as you did. ::she gives a concerned smile:: That’s your job, right? To protect your crew, and give them the best chance at survival?
Solas still avoided looking her in the eyes, but he leaned back into his chair, and felt himself relaxing a little. What she said, though he wasn’t sure he fully believed it, had held a little bit of truth.
Kel: Well I’m just glad Savel got away. I’m glad no one got hurt. I’m supposed to be keeping everyone safe right? I don’t know how I could live with myself if I’d gotten someone hurt.
Vhysa’lia: Exactly. That’s how you should be framing it to yourself - that while you were able to act, you did your best to minimize the harm to others around you, as is your duty.
Solas grimaced and looked down again.
Kel: We can’t say that for certain though can we?
Vhysa’lia: What you should focus on is what you can account for - not what you can’t. I understand that not being able to recall what happened to your body while assimilated by the Borg is distressing, but you can’t blame yourself. You had your autonomy stripped from you, completely.
This was true, and unlike some of the other things that he had been told he really believed it. Regardless of whether he could’ve fought them off or not, they had taken his ability to act from him.
Kel: I guess I should be happy then. If they really did take control of me completely then I can just pretend I was never part of them. I can pretend that all happened to someone else.
Vhysa’lia: Solas, do you want to discuss some exercises that you could explore in your down-time to help with what you’re feeling? ::pause:: If not, we can continue to talk about your experience during Frontier Day, or anything else you want to talk about.
Solas frowned, he would rather not dwell on his Frontier day experience, or lack thereof. Indeed, he felt like there was precious little for him to talk about regarding the events of the day itself.
Kel: Please Counselor, tell me about these exercises. I would like to learn more.
Vhysa’lia: response
Solas raised an eyebrow.
Kel: Counselor, I’m not sure I understand how that will help. I know that therapuetic excercises are always a little opaque but, well I guess I would like to know the logic behind it at least.
If the counselor thought there was anything ironic about the half-Vulcan asking for logic she did not reveal it. Instead, she simply and professionally explained the purpose of the technique to him.
Vhysa’lia: response
