((Captain's Ready Room - USS Artemis))

After interrupting the Captain’s subspace messages about her extended warranty, Sam settled into the chair across from her.

Richards: Thank you for bringing me on with the Science Department. Although, I will have to take a little bit of time off in the fall. ::Rubbing her belly:: I tried to tell Talos he should give birth to them, but he said no. Something about the “wrong equipment”.

Sam shrugged and let out a breathy laugh.

MacKenzie: I’m not surprised in the slightest. Well, you know what they say when animals escape from their cages… ::shrugging:: That ship has sailed anyway. Happy to have you back.

Richards: Sounds like you need to upgrade the locks on your cages. ::Smirking:: I’m happy to be here.

After the times that Sam had interacted with the Captain, this time felt different. There was a new level of professionalism and a strange sense of comfort, whether that feeling would stay or not remained to be seen.

MacKenzie: So, have you given any thought about to which department you’d like to be assigned? I don’t recall offhand what area of scientific expertise is.

Richards: Planetary Science, but I do have experience with Botany and Astrometrics.

MacKenzie smiled and nodded.

MacKenzie: I’m sure Commander Jovenan will appreciate the assistance. I’m also curious how you feel about serving here as a civilian alongside the other enlisted crew members. If I’m honest, this is a new situation for me, considered largely because of your ::gesturing to her stomach:: unique circumstances.

Richards: ::Pursing her lips to the side:: To be completely transparent, I am a little nervous about all of it. It’s going to be an adjustment not having a herd of civilians near me, but I think it’ll all be okay. If it’s not– you’ll be the first to hear about it.

While Sam didn’t expect there to be any problems working alongside so many officers, she wasn’t going to let her lack of rank be what everyone saw.

Her hands lowered to her stomach, but kept her eyes on the Captain.

Richards: When it comes to– ::pointing at her stomach:: -these unique circumstances… This is all new territory for me too. I will do everything in my ability to be a helpful part of the crew until the babies arrive. After I get to spend some time with them and adjust to parenthood, I plan to report back to work as soon as I am able.

MacKenzie: Response

Ricards: I think taking it day by day is going to be our best bet.

With a grateful heart, Sam gave the Captain a smile. If it wasn’t for her willingness to give Sam a chance, things may not have worked out as well as they did.

MacKenzie: Response

Richards: I would like to know what expectations you have for me. I have a great deal of respect for you and the last thing I want is to disappoint you.

MacKenzie: Response
