(( Intensive Care Unit - Primary Sickbay, Deck 07, USS Artemis-A ))
Jaran: It's worth pointing out that it's unclear whether it was an effect of the crystals themselves or if it was a result of a Boraxian ritual using the crystals. I myself lean toward it requiring an active component from the ritual leader as we never observed the crystals having an effect without outside intervention.
It concerned Yesfir that the redheaded Ensign found joy in ‘not knowing’, particularly when their own continued existence as a Bajoran, and not as a Dark Thing, was hinging on them finding a solution.
Perhaps their mind no longer considered the transformation a negative thing?
oO It might be time to make a request for a security detail to stand guard over the patients. Oo
Meyers: Then testing that must be our first priority, though I’m unsure whether our patients are in a physical condition to undergo repeat ritual attempts.
Jaran: The subject wouldn't necessarily need to be conscious. All Lt. Imril did during the ritual was to exist quietly.
Meyers: The question also remains whether the ritual will even be effective now that there’s a separate mutational process occurring within the patients. ::shakes her head dismissively:: It will be a massive stressor on their cell stability. Our time for testing is limited.
Unfortunately, there was very little they could do about this, as going forwards with the ritual without testing was more than likely to end in doing absolutely nothing.
Jaran: We have huge amounts of data on the ritual. An empath would need to be the one to perform it, and they would need to study what was done very precisely. I'm still not even certain we can replicate it at all, but at least we'll know quickly if it doesn't work.
That was a relief. It was for times such as this that the Starfleet dedication to responsible PADDwork proved its merit, and why Yesfir would scoff each time someone complained about it.
Meyers: Let’s pull up all the data we can. Both on the function of the Yurum in the ritual, and on the behaviour of the crystal post-activation.
Accessing the console, Yesfir started sifting through the AAR reports written by Chief Morgan and Lieutenant Imril following the demonstration conducted in the Holodeck half a year ago, along with the sensor readings recorded by the Artemis.
Jaran: Response
Yesfir leaned back, her forehead exhibiting more furrows than previously.
Meyers: ... And that’s where the good news end, unfortunately. From this data, it’s very clear that it has to be a Yurum conducting the ritual. ::indicates screen:: See? The crystal is reliant on some kind of secretion from the Yurum to activate properly. No Betazoid, no matter how skilled, can replicate that.
Jaran: Response
She rose from her seat, grim determination on her face.
Meyers: If activating the crystal is out of the question, Lieutenant Imril becomes our only source of crystallized cells. ::nods:: Let’s rejoin the others.
Jaran: Response
