((Security Suite - near the Armoury - Deck 3 - USS Karnack))
Ava's mind was racing. And she kept coming back to the heat…
Munro: But at least now we know Imril has temperature control but that will only work in the areas of the ship we have connected to the core. We know they are attracted to heat, right? I always think that you get better results with positivity than negativity. Let's give them what they want. Captain, I suggest we set off controlled explosions in the armoury, which should raise the temperature in this section of the deck, it should be enough of a distraction for us to get to Sickbay? From Sickbay we do the remodulation and then get to the Bridge? And then off this planet.Ollie glanced at Brey, noticing that she seemed ready to say something.
Breys: Sir, explosions could cause more damage to the hull, why don’t we create a radiant heat source instead.
Ava nodded. She should have thought of that. Another indicator that she wasn't thinking clearly. Breys still seemed to have her head down straight and that was a relief.
Bergmen: That could work, but it brings with it a completely different set of challenges…
Bergmen didn't seem to finish his own stream of consciousness so it was up to the Captain to continue the conversation.
MacKenzie: I'm inclined to agree, I don't want to do anything that might compromise the integrity of the ship any more than it already is. Other thoughts?
The eager ensign was quick to chime in.
Breys: We could cause a hairline rupture in one of the exhaust sections of an EPS conduit. That should allow us to create a plasma jet hotter than any explosion could get, but still small enough that it won’t cause significant damage to the ship, even if it gets a little out of control. The fire suppression network can put it out once we restore power to secondary systems. If we do this I wouldn’t come back in here til after we restore those systems though.
Bergmen: Yeah, that can we definitely make to work.
Munro: :: nods :: It will work.
Ava waited for the Captain to give her approval, after several tense glances she nodded.
MacKenzie: Let's hurry.
Breys: I’ll get right on it, sir!
MacKenzie: When you're ready, Ensign.
Ava took the moment to gather her strength, she felt the Thing again. Frantically pushing at the door. Claws extended. The pain crept up her spine and clouded her vision briefly.
oO Harper Oo
Breys: Ready when you all are! This place is a button push and ten seconds from making whoever comes in here ready to be plated and served.
The ensigns calls brought her back to the events around her. She wanted something to focus on, when she had that her mind was clear and sharp. Without it, her thoughts would wander into the dark corridors of the Karnack.
Where the dark things are.
Munro: I'm good.
MacKenzie: Bergmen, get the door. Breys, you count it down.
Ava just hung back as Bergmen moved to the door and Breys began to count down.
Breys: Response
As the ensign counted down she felt it… the Thing knew. It waited.
3…
Ava inhaled her breath … the Thing exhaled it's own breath. The door opened and the Captain fired as Thing was struck.
Ava let out a gasp, she flew the pain as it flew backwards. The scream of agonising misery filled her mind.
MacKenzie: Bergmen, you take up the rear.
The Captain was beyond the door, and Ava didn't hesitate to follow. She knew it was still alive, barely wounded, only stunned by the blast from the Captain. She didn't need to look.
No. She didn't want to look. She felt like if she looked into it's eyes it would take her and she'd drown in them.
MacKenzie: Ensign, did those EPS conduits rupture as planned?
Breys: Response
MacKenzie: Good, let's hope that draws some attention. Sickbay should be nearby, and just one deck up, I think... ::stopping long enough to toss her tricorder to Munro:: Which way?
Ava grabbed the Tri order, glad that she had something to do. Something useful. Ava scanned the deck, Sickbay was an easy read given that it was one of the few places that still had a working system.
Munro: Straight ahead. Sickbays on this deck, Captain.
Breys: Response
Ava moved instinctively down the corridor, every shadow could be a thing. Every movement could be there last. The tension was stifling. Distant screams could be heard. And the strikes of claws against metal.
As they continued, there was suddenly silence.
Bergmen: Do you not hear it too? It’s too silent, everything. ::turns to the team:: The door?
Munro: I think the ensigns plan worked. Don't ask me how I know …
She stopped. Something else came to her. Another image. Only it was herself she could see. The Captain. Bergmen. Breys.
Breys/MacKenzie: Response
Further down the corridor, a shadowed outline. A Thing held back. Eyes reflected against the little light they had in the corridor. Bergmen was skittish, she felt it in him.
The Thing hesitated, she raised her hand towards it. A plea for mercy to the creature. And it disappeared into the shadows.
Bergmen had closed his eyes and then turned to her.
Bergmen: Did you...
He looked shocked, no maybe terrified, then blinked.
He then smiled.
Bergmen: Just bypass the matrix and turn the polarity; it resets the lock.
A creepy shift in demeanour.
Munro: You okay Bergmen?
It was said with sincerity. The sudden change in mood was disturbing. He had gone through one spin in the teleporter.
Breys/MacKenzie/Bergmen: Response
Munro: I think it's the volume of them, it's enhancing the effects. Stay strong. Focus, lieutenant .
Just then they felt the thrum running beneath them through the deck. The lights of the corridor grew brighter, flashed several times and held steady. The Sickbay door opened.
The forcefield had been extended around the decks. Ava smiled and couldn't resist a laugh.
Breys/MacKenzie/Bergmen: Response
((Sickbay - Deck 3 - USS Karnack))
Munro: Now all we need to do is use the access in the quarantine suite to connect the rest of the necessary systems to the computer core.
Breys/MacKenzie/Bergmen: Response
