Ensign observed his superior as he crunched on biscuits, soaking in the wisdom the commander offered in answer to all his questions. It was truly interesting to have the chance to talk like this with someone senior in the service who was willing and open to sharing his keys to success.

Bergmen: What are the most important traits to look for when choosing the team you will work with?

Commander paused his chewing, narrowing his eyes as he focused his answer with meaning hidden between the lines.

Vel: Reading between the lines, and understanding the subtext of what a superior is trying to tell you, as well as being good at independent working, that sort of thing.

Bergmen nodded eagerly as he jotted down his notes, but then he suddenly paused, turning to the commander with an intense gaze. The glimmer in his eyes revealed the thoughts swirling in his mind.

Bergmen: Is it accurate to say that the advice is more personalized rather than general, sir?

Vel: Let me ask you a question, Bergmen - have you got any independent working you could be getting on with?

Ollie hesitated, biting his lip as he pondered his response.

Bergmen: From today’s to-do, I completed the whole list, sir. But when you mention that… I was asked to look into one LCARS UI update from the quartermaster. I wanted to review that tonight, but I guess now is as good a time as any. And there was the thing with flyops I wanted to take a look at for a long time, regarding their rostering. During my rotation down there, I felt they could use their people resources more effectively.

Vel: Response

Bergmen: Sounds good, sir. I can get started right away.

Vel: Response

Ensign nodded, rising from his chair and hugging his PADD tightly to his chest.

Bergmen: Thank you for your feedback and pieces of advice, sir. If you excuse me, I have work to do.

Vel: Response

Ollie stood at attention for a moment before turning toward the door. Although he attempted to hide his excitement, the lightness in his steps betrayed him with the impression that he was departing with a happier heart than when he first entered. The naivety of youth, believing that more work brings more recognition...
