The young ensign made his way along the gradual turn of the corridor; his antennae twitched as his mind quietly mapped out the route, in an ever-overlapping series of sonar-like pulses.  He had been tasked with ensuring the various environmental and crew support systems were to the liking of the newly assigned crew.  This managed to combine his most and least favorite things to do; namely, lose himself in the peace and quiet of technology, and deal with the nerves and unpredictability of meeting new people.    

As he approached his destination, his pace reduced to an amble.  He had in one hand a standard-issue engineering kit; and in the other, a Padd; he glanced down at it, his dark blue eyes tracking across the display.  Lieutenant Vailani Zoyara, Chief Operations Officer, Bajoran.  The ensign’s gaze shifted to the middle distance as his attention retreated into his memory; Bajor V had similar gravity and climate to that of Earth, and Bajorans environmental needs were typically much like those of humans; and, therefore, much like Starfleet’s default.  The Andorian smiled for a moment at how human-centric Starfleet remained.

He began to up his pace, but halted suddenly as a thought arrived; Bajorans tended to be religious, but did that incline them to the burning of candles and incense; he couldn’t remember, if so, he’d have to adjust the environmental safety parameters to accommodate it.

Bip!  His Padd flashed up the ship’s time, the Lieutenant’s name and quarters.  The young ensign hustled along corner and, upon arriving at Deck 3 Quarters 1785, pressed door chime with the top corner of his Padd.  He dropped the Padd.  As he bent over to pick it up, the door slide open with a swoosh.
