What were Disco Biscuits? Were they actual biscuits? If so, where did the ‘disco’ come into the equation? And what kind of ‘disco’ did it imply? She recalled rumours on the vessel indicating that ‘disco’ was an abbreviation for ‘discovery’, in which case, was it biscuits cut into shapes of stars and planets? Or maybe maps? Or was this the same kind of ‘disco’ as that infamous lightbulb Sil-net seemed intent on finding space for on the Bridge?

Linguistics admittedly wasn’t Gila’s strong suit, but this stumped her.

Sadar: Disco...? ::shakes her head:: I-I mean, I wouldn’t know the first thing about hooking one of those up... And how should it be stored? Will it take up space?

Tho’Bi: I could hook it up for you ::scratches back of neck:: though, I’d need permission from a senior engineer. ::his head rocks from side to side::  And… their sign off before we turned it on.  ::nods and smiles::  Yeah.  Maybe better to just get a senior engineer.

Gila had been afraid of this very thing, and while she conceded to the logic of awaiting a senior engineer’s go-ahead and confirmation that this was a viable progression for them, that didn’t make teh anxiety any less intense.

oO Oh, why did Lt. Commander Salkath have to be on leave!? Oo

Sadar: Oh... O-Okay. W-Who would you suggest?

oO Don’t say Lieutenant Minthar, don’t say Lieutenant Minthar- Oo

Tho’Bi: Lieutenant Minthar.

Gila almost felt like audibly sighing at that. Obviously  this was what was going to happen. She’d been absurd to think that the Wheel would spare her more fearsome encounters this shoreleave. Never mind that she’d had to play peacemaker between an abrasive Bajoran and a promiscuous Betazoid, nor the fact that she’d had to submit herself to the ruthless analysis of Lt. Commander Jashkaa, who seemed at all moments in time primed and ready to ruin her day...  And never mind that she’d had to write falsehoods into her report to Starfleet Medical to preserve the secrecy and protection of a new species of sentient tree that had tried to kill her and the crew! No, no problem at all. This was just standard Starfleet fare.

A slight sigh did escape her.

Sadar: I... I-I see. I guess, if you say so.

Tho’Bi: :: looks around :: I don’t see him.

Small mercies did exist, and Gila saw an opportunity to ensure that she didn’t have to face the Lieutenant right this instant. Surely she could just send him a written communication requesting his analysis of the viability of Ensign Tho’Bi’s suggestion?

One should never make a meeting of something that could be handled in writing, after all!

Sadar: The mission departs in a couple of days, so I hope that’d be plenty of time. We aren’t often this close to the Alpha Quadrant, so we need to get as much value out of the trip as we possibly can.

Tho’Bi:  :: still nodding :: Best to make an early start.  We should speak with Lieutenant Minthar now  :: looks around :: If we can find him.

oO Should we? Really? Oo

Sadar: W-Well, I’ve already interrupted your shift, I wouldn’t want to impose on Lieutenant Minthar as well. B-Besides, he ::looks around in a paranoid fashion:: doesn’t seem to be here right now?

Tho’Bi:  Sorry about this, Lieutenant.  :: looks quickly around :: I’ll ask one of the other ensigns.

Ensign Tho’Bi started heading towards one of the other Engineers on duty and Gila hastily scrambled to intercept.

Sadar: Ensign Tho’Bi!

She interposed herself in her attempt to prevent him from moving.

Tho’Bi: Response

Sadar: I-I don’t want to keep you from your work any longer, especially not after interrupting you in such a rude manner! I-I’ll send a formal request to Lieutenant Minthar, and he’ll do what he deems best, I’m sure.

Tho’Bi: Response

Sadar: Oh no, I-I’m quite sure! ::pretends to look at the chronometer:: B-Besides, I need to get back to Sickbay soon.

She started backing away from the Andorian Ensign, if not to flee in case he kept pushing the immediate resolution to their agenda, then to extricate herself from Engineering before Crewman Voor saw her and started one of his hypochondriac rants that she’d have to dedicate a frankly inconvenient amount of time talking down.

Tho’Bi: Response

Sadar: Y-Yes, right, of course. Uhh, I shall mention that in my communication! H-Have a nice day, Ensign.

And Gila moved faster than Gila usually moved, eager to get out of sight.

Why did so many intimidating or frustrating individuals work in Engineering? She only hoped Ensign Tho’Bi - who seemed a very amiable and industrious individual - wouldn’t see that kind of behaviour as a prerequisite for a promotion. A 6 foot Andorian with a Miradorn’s brusque personality and a Bolian’s intrusive need for discussing every little thing that could possibly be wrong, and refusing assurances that everything was fine? No, that is most certainly not what the Engineering department needed.

Or Gila’s sanity.
