(( Deck 7, USS Artemis-A ))

Ava had once heard an old Earth phrase uttered by her Aunt Christie, a no nonsense Academy TacSec Professor, that had stuck with her throughout the years: ‘Come Hell or High Water’. And nothing could sum up Ava Munro’s dedication to her favourite pastime of running. Also something that Aunt Christie was responsible for.

Ava had been running since she was fifteen years old, when she went to live with her aunt on Earth - a wilful teenager from the frontier determined to get into Starfleet Academy at any cost. Truth was she was a frightened girl that had chewed off more than she could chew and her aunt knew it from the first moment she arrived. That’s when the dawn runs began. She would get her up and they’d go running, each day she would push the limits. Ava cried on more than one occasion, even begged to stop, and Aunt Christie only smiled and said ‘you can stop anytime you want, and a shuttle can take you right back home to Naura. You’ll be back in your bed in a month. No dawn runs anymore’.

Even through her tears, Ava knew it was a test and she knew her aunt well enough to know that she meant it. But it also would mean there would be no Starfleet Academy and for Ava that wasn’t an option. So come hell or high water, Ava would run.

Even through the ruins of a deck that was still undergoing repairs, Ava would run.

With a little more care than she would otherwise. As she passed by repair teams, she huffed out a hello or a good morning as she ran. She didn’t hear their responses because her favourite band ‘Dock Rats Deluxe’ blared in her earpiece, and the guitar riff was in full crescendo as the Bolian lead singer sang about the Vulcan that stole his heart and took a shuttle to Risa. Classic Frontier Rock music - the Vulcans were always stealing hearts, sometimes literally.

“... T’Laaaarrrraaaa … told me ‘not today, not in eternityyyyyyy’ and in -”

Then there was a body running towards her, she hesitated slightly to avoid a collision - hands flailed briefly as she adjusted to avoid him. She dropped her speed and her pacing was off now. She cast a frustrated look to the man.

oO that's going to cost me time Oo

Then this person, with some discomfort she noted, matched her pace. She tapped the ear piece to stop the music and smiled at him. Her frustation was replaced with a mischievious glint. She recognised him as an ensign, Doctor Bancroft.

Bancroft: ::wheezing cheerfully:: Sorry about that – er… actually, I don’t know your name. I’m new here. Ensign Bancroft, Medical.

In a mischievous mood, and in revenge for nearly being knocked off her stride, she picked up pace. Only slightly, she had to make up her time after all.

Munro: :: between breaths :: You don’t know your own patient's, Doctor? That’s a little concerning?

Bancroft: Response

Munro: :: joking :: I wonder what the first officer would think about that?

She casually raised her hands and pulled her ponytail tighter, whilst picking up pace again. The act placed more resistance on her legs and she felt beads of sweat form on her forehead. Aunt Christie, ever the font of wisdom, would tell her that showing off is for fools and Munro's aren't fools.

oO give me this one Oo

Her own legs started to burn and the good doctor was doing a good job matching her. She began to put some effort in. It had been a while since she had a capable running partner.

Bancroft: Response

Munro: Ava Munro, your new XO. Where did you learn to keep pace? The Academy?

Bancroft: Response
