(( Cockpit - USS Perseus, Main Shuttlebay, Deck 11, USS Artemis-A ))

Imril: No, I’m not running preflights yet. Just looking over the specs. According to the maintenance logs, all of the shuttles received thorough tune-ups while we were away. In case they’d be needed for search parties. Workbees, too.

K’Wara: Well, that’s heartwarming. Though I’m pleased they didn’t send them. I don’t think these beauties could’ve stood up to the Maelstrom any longer than the Karnack did.

Imril: I’m sure given more time, they’d have worked something out. Not that I wanted to sit around planetside and wait.

K’Wara moved around and took a seat in the secondary pilot’s seat. Out of the corner of their eye Imril saw them look at the PADD in their hand.

K’Wara: I know the Starfleet Corps of Engineers were real interested in the incident report for the Karnack’s crash. Any news on that front?

Imril shook their head with a scoffing smirk.

Imril: It could take weeks or months to get an official analysis back from the Corps Of Engineers. ::Raises  a finger:: But! I copied that padd I found in Main Engineering. The Karnack’s Chief Engineer was working on ideas similar to the ones we used to get the ship moving.  But she was treating it as an intellectual exercise rather than something that needed to be actively put into practice.

At the risk of dipping into stereotypes, that was Zakdorns for you.

Imril: Between her notes and what I learned from our team actually getting the Faraday fields up, I have some concepts for building a new mission pod for the Runabout. A specialized shield generator that could enable expiration of the Maelstrom and regions like it. But I have to get some other engineer’s eyes on my designs before I write up a proposal to actually build a prototype.

K’Wara: Well, if anyone can figure it out, I’m sure it’s you all. ::looks up from the PADD with a smile:: All right. Ready to get started?

Imril: Aye. ::Taps a hail:: =/\= Perseus to Shuttlebay Control. We’re all crewed up and ready to head out. Mission profile 77-8-Alpha. Requesting permission to disembark. =/\=

Grace: =/\= Permission granted. Happy flying. =/\=

Imril: On your order, Lieutenant.

K’Wara: Response.

Imril tapped the command that released the docking magnetics. Simultaneously, Ensign Greer Grace opened the bay door. The glowing blue outline surrounding the widening void assured that the air would not be departing with the shuttle.

With practised ease (because they had spent part of the previous day practicing in the holodeck) Imril lifted the ship up off the deck and sent it flying smoothly past the atmo-screen. Into the wide-open space above Rylor.

So far, so good.

K’Wara: Response.

Imril: Oh! And I also worked out how to make an energy-based freeze-ray pistol! Could be very useful if-slash-when we ever go back to Callis. Purely as a deterrent, of course.

Well, thus far the concept was entirely an intellectual exercise. They had yet to actually test any of the hypotheses involved.

K’Wara: Response.
