((Gymnasium, Deck 4 - USS Artemis-A))

Genkos arrived early to the Gymnasium in order to set up. It had been an absolute age since he’d last played tassa’akai, and he needed to warm up as well as prepare the physical space. First, he showered in the gym’s accompanying bathroom and got into his workout outfit - a tight bodysuit in a pale teal and accompanying belt. Hanging from said belt was an akai, a collapsible fighting baton of Betazoid origin.

Next, he set out the “arena” - a long thin strip of a stage, padded on either side in case they fell, with a bench beside for resting and keeping their drinks. Genkos took a long swig of chilled uttaberry juice and began a series of stretches.

In the midst of one stretch, his head dangling between his legs, he saw the doors swoosh open, and a familiar face enter.

Adea: Aha! Talos, good to see you.

Talos replied as he set his gym bag next to the bench and untied the robe-like tunic that covered his own skin-tight black leotard before draping it over the bag.

Dakora: You too. ::He gestured toward the stretching doctor.:: Excellent mobility by the way.

Genkos gestured to the playing area, then took another sip of uttaberry juice. The last time he’d played a round with a real opponent was with Corliss, aboard the Gorkon, which was… longer ago than he cared to mention. He’d focused on playing against holograms in the intervening time, but they never managed to get the telepathic elements of the game right. He ignored Talos’ smirk - Kalianna was a lucky woman, and Genkos knew it.

Adea: When was the last time you played a bout of tassa’akai?

He could see in Talos’ face that the man missed it.

Dakora: It’s been a while. ::He shrugged.:: Not since the last time Lieutenant Prala wiped the floor with me back in the Academy. I limped into my Tactical Final the next morning feeling like a cargo sled had run me over.

It was Genkos’ turn to smirk, and he raised an eyebrow in Talos’ direction.

Adea: So I should go easy on you?

Talos nodded as he began to shake out his muscles and do a little stretching of his own. Genkos did that thing where you try and pull out one’s shoulder by pointing all the way to one side and tugging at it with the other arm.

Dakora: Yeah, I might be a little rusty. ::He smirked.:: But it’s not every day that someone offers to beat me with a stick in the name of tradition. I couldn’t refuse.

Genkos chuckled, and removed his akai from his side. With a flick of a wrist he extended it to full length, and felt the weight. He’d had this particular akai for quite a few years now, and it had gone through many a thwacking session with his former counsellor, Corliss Fortune. He wondered what the diminutive Betazoid was doing now that she was taking a breath from Starfleet.

He knew that she used it as an excuse to therapise him, but he hadn’t minded - it was a good technique - his mind was so full of tactics that his mouth would utter his deepest, darkest secrets to the bewigged wonder.

With a nod to Genkos, Talos stepped barefoot onto the mat and moved to his end of the narrow arena. Genkos followed suit, rolling his shoulders as he did so, and pointed the baton at his opponent.

Dakora: Ready when you are.

Adea: As the humans say, en guarde.

Talos dropped into the starting stance— knees bent slightly, akai held loosely at the ready, mind wide open. Genkos matched him, slowing his breathing as he did so. He had reach, but Talos had strength, and most likely speed. The pair of them locked eyes and their minds mingled, and Talos made the first move.

The First Officer surged forward, and Genkos could tell that the move towards Genkos’ left was absolutely a feint, and he brought up his akai to parry that strike. The telltale thwack of the sticks meant he had been correct, and Genkos pushed his akai against Talos’, until his opponent backed off.

Dakora: ~Thought I had you for sure. ::He beckoned him forward with his off hand.:: Let’s see what you’ve got.~

Genkos raised an eyebrow, his eyes twinkling with mischievous delight.

Adea: ~ You’re on. ~

Genkos took a half step forward, his gaze firmly set upon Talos’ left shoulder. Then he surged forward, taking several steps almost at once, and at the last moment his eyes flicked towards the man’s hip - was he changing direction? Only his body knew for sure.

Dakora: Response

His akai made contact with something at the man’s shoulder height, but in the melee that ensued, Genkos couldn’t be sure if it was flesh or metal, so instead he twirled away, nearly overbalancing off the side, but righting himself just in the nick of time.

Adea: ~ Nearly ~

Dakora: Response

"You know, I'm really easy to get along with most of the time, but I don't like bullies and I don't like threats, and I don't like you, Culluh. You can try and stop us from getting to the truth but I promise you that if you do I will respond with all the 'unique technologies' at my command." - Kathryn Janeway
