Benny was having a session with Ensign Chevalier, to aid him with his new prosthetic leg. He had told him to bend his knee four times. As he expected, the last movements were sluggish, and none were natural.
After the last attempt Chevalier massaged the stump of his biological leg and looked at Benny.
Chevalier: Like I said. If I lose attention even for a moment, he hardly listens to me.
Benny nodded. It was a common reaction. He had seen it too many times before, and there wasn’t really a clear universal solution. Sometimes it would take years for the person holding the prosthetic to really adjust to it.
Cliffhigh: Well, since it's a leg, not an ear I would be concerned if he did. Relax for a moment, will you let me try something?
Chevalier: I will try…
Benny let Chevalier rest and gently held the leg by the knee joint. He wondered how he could improve the movement, but help him
Cliffhigh: It is very common to be eager to walk back again. And to take time adjusting to the prosthetic. Close your eyes and let me move your knee a few times. If you feel any pain, let me know.
Chevalier: I’m ready…
Slowly Benny began to raise Chevalier’s leg by the knee and at the same rhythm to lower and finally straight it. He repeated the movement.
Cliffhigh: Keep your eyes closed as I move it. Don’t try and move it yourself, I want you to feel it moving. Once you do, then try and keep the motion exactly as I am doing it.
There was a stiffness, as Benny expected, but with gentle and careful motion Benny moved Chevalier’s leg. This exercise was as physical as it was psychological, adjusting to a new limb was hard, no matter from what part of the galaxy one came from.
Regrettably he had seen too many of such cases during the War, in fact that's where he gained most of his experience. He smiled as Chevalier looked more relaxed and he kept motioning his leg, more and more freely.
Benny smiled as he felt the exercise was working. He was now applying less and less pressure, and when he set it down Chevalier straightened up.
He opened his eyes and smiled at him.
Chevalier: Did I make it? Did a leg move?
Benny raised his head, smiled and nodded at the small victory of the young ensign.
Cliffhigh: Yes it did. But more importantly it moved naturally.
Chevalier: Response
Benny again reached for the leg, putting it straight. It was a long road, and not exactly figuratively.
Cliffhigh: You are basically learning to walk again without having to think to take a step forward.
And that isn’t just a physical adjustment. Now ready for another challenge?
Chevalier: Response
Benny stood up and opened his arms.
Cliffhigh: Why don’t you try and stand? Again don't force it, just feel it. I will catch you if you lose balance.
