((Conference Room - Deck 1, USS Artemis))
Addison sat at the head of the conference table as Salkath ran them through
the extensive damage report. Repairs were already underway, though the remodel
of her ready room was far down on the list of priorities, as was the Artemis
in general. Still, for as bad as the reports were, she continued to be reminded
that, all things considered, they fared far better than many others in the
fleet. Now, she turned her attention to the possibility of using their position
of fortune to help others.
MacKenzie: I’m wondering how long you think it might take if we try to
sort out the bulk of the repairs ourselves? We fared far better than most,
thankfully.
Salkath: ::an uncharacteristic shrug:: We cannot hazard a guess.
Proportionate to the crew, the engineering department is suffering from
widespread physical and emotional trauma, not to mention sheer exhaustion.
Those of us who remain on active duty are stretched thin.
Talos nodded, a grim expression playing across his face. Addison was intimately
familiar with their losses and the shared trauma of those who remained. Still,
they had a responsibility for moving forward: to continue Starfleet’s mission,
and to honor the dead in doing so.
Dakora: I understand, they've been through a lot. The whole crew has.
What are your next steps and how can we help?
Salkath: Compile a priority list, and we will ensure that repair crews
tackle them as efficiently as they can. ::pause:: However, if I may be so bold,
I would suggest you entreat Command to place the Artemis on an
extended break from active duty. We need time. And I would not be surprised if
my department wasn't the first to suggest this need.
MacKenzie: I’m going to be honest, we’re not going anywhere for a while.
Certainly not out of the system, let alone out of the quadrant and back to the
Borderlands. I think we should also rotate small leave opportunities for the
crew… Commander?
Talos turned to Addison and nodded his agreement again.
Dakora: I agree completely. That gives us time to patch things up
and our crew time to process… everything.
Salkath: I will ensure the lieutenant is aware that we need to manage
our departmental personnel effectively through targeted leave assignments.
It was Addison’s turn to nod in agreement.
MacKenzie: Great, let’s do that. How does that
potentially impact our repair time, assuming we won’t get any help from
Starfleet?
Salkath: If I must estimate, and will not be beholden to those
estimates... Considering meaningful rest periods for the technicians... Just
under two weeks for basic operational readiness. Just under four for complete
nominal efficiency on all primary and secondary systems. Less if we can dock
for repairs or can secure a reliable source of materials.
It wasn’t ideal, but at this point nothing was. The projections were
steeped in reality, and the reality was they had a lot of work ahead and the
people available to perform the work were stretched thin, dealing with physical
and psychological trauma on a scale even the crew of the Artemis hadn’t
faced before. Not to mention the resources available to Starfleet were going toward
rebuilding the fleet, especially the ships who were far worse off than they.
True to form, Talos summed up the projection practically.
Dakora: It is what it is. We can try and sweeten the deal for anyone who
is willing to stay and work extended shifts. More leave days for the next
deployment? Additional holodeck hours?
Addison rocked her head back and forth. She hated that they couldn’t move as
fast as she wanted, but she also recognized the need for her officers to process
the events that happened.
MacKenzie: I’m wondering if there are other ships in the vicinity with
whom we could pool resources – both personnel and technical – to see if we can
all get up and running a little faster…
Talos rubbed his chin and thought for a moment.
Dakora: Maybe we can reach out to Fleet Captain Ranier on DS224? She
could possibly loan us some parts and personnel.
The crew of the Artemis had historically been a drain on the station’s
resources and a perpetual thorn in Rainier’s side. The Borderlands was a
dangerous area of the galaxy, and during her multiple tours of the area on the Resolution,
Excalibur, and now the Artemis, they’d requested more than their
fair share of the station’s attention. Addison hoped Rainier attributed most of
that to Commodore Nicholotti, and not to her…
Salkath: If you mean parts and
personnel delivered to us here, rather than us returning to the
Borderlands, then perhaps. If we need to leave Sector 001 to effect repairs,
then there are more advantageous locations to report to.
She nodded slowly. The point was true, though she couldn’t imagine Command
greenlighting departure orders for any of the ships that were currently capable
of leaving.
MacKenzie: No doubt, though I doubt Starfleet Command will want anyone leaving
right away – Earth’s defenses are scarily lacking… Though I can’t help but
think about all the species across the galaxy that might want to take advantage
of Starfleet’s vulnerability at a time like this, and it would be nice to get
out ahead of them…
Salkath splayed his hands in front him.
Dakora: The faster we are repaired the sooner we can get back to keeping
the peace in her backyard. It's worth an ask. That's all I'm saying….
MacKenzie: ::raising her hands:: No, it’s a good point. I’ll put in the
request and see if they have any free hands and other materials.
Dakora/Salkath: Response
MacKenzie: Put together a comprehensive
list so I only have to make one ask. And make sure it’s robust – I’m sure she
won’t be able to grant everything, but at least if we over-ask, we increase
our chances of getting more of the things we actually need.
Dakora/Salkath: Response
Addison’s face became serious, yet unconcerned, as she looked to Talos though was
clearly speaking to Salkath.
MacKenzie: I suppose we can’t expedite the remodel of
the ready room…?
Dakora/Salkath: Responses
