((Molly Malone’s Irish Pub - Deck 225, Deep Space 224))
After a recommendation against the hasperat from her captain, Lyara settled on the pizza. Although it was probably just replicated, the fact the hasperat wasn’t spicy was a food crime all on its own.
Lyara: Thanks for the warning about the hasperat. Nothing bothers me more than it lacking spice.
MacKenzie: ::waving her hand dismissively again:: It’s the worst. I take it you’re a fan, then? From what I know of your people, it’s such a common dish that each family has their own take on it…
Like Bajorans, hasperat also needed spice. And if she had eaten it she might have prayed for forgiveness from the Prophets.
Lyara: I make mine at home. I’ve got a recipe so spicy it’ll make your eyes water just being in the same room as it.
MacKenzie: I believe you have my attention…
The bartender returned with the Ensign’s drink and slice of pizza. Alroyo gave a nod in thanks as he placed them in front of her. She took a small sip of the drink and relished its sweet flavor.
Lyara: I’ll have to send you the recipe. If one of your favorites is hasperat I don’t expect it to be too much for you.
At the academy she had found that even if humans couldn’t handle their spices they would still try to eat any of it they could get their hands on. And after a breaking of expectations, Lyara could see her CO might have that same human love for spices.
MacKenzie: Challenge accepted, then. (beat) ::pointing:: The pizza smell’s good, how’s it taste?
Alroyo picked up the slice and took a bite to relay a detailed report to MacKenzie. It wasn’t as spicy as how she liked a lot of her food, but the cheese was just perfect. The mix of vegetables and meats complimented each other as the slice had a perfect amount of each in every bite. It wasn’t often she found what she considered a “perfect slice” of pizza, her step dad had made sure she could find the right one. But he’d be proud to know she was eating a good slice.
She swallowed the bite as it’s rude to speak with your mouth full, and gave her opinion to Addison.
Lyara: It’s amazing, best slice I’ve ever tasted.
It was a little bit of hyperbole, but she was primarily shocked at just how good the slice was. Perhaps it was the mix of just getting back from a mission where she got stabbed and finally adapting to the new ship.
MacKenzie wiped her fingers with a napkin then took a sip of her coffee.
MacKenzie: So, Ensign, why did you request a transfer from Denali Station?
The question had caught her only a little bit off guard. She had answered it during her first meeting with the Captain in her ready room, but at the time she had given an answer of “the fleet needed me elsewhere” but had never said why she applied for the transfer.
Lyara: Well, to be honest. I just didn’t see the station life working out for me personally. Being in one spot didn’t sound as fulfilling as traveling across a whole region to help others. ::Taking a small sip of her drink:: So when I saw the form to transfer I took the chance.
Addison nodded her head slowly at her response.
MacKenzie: Fair. And how are you finding the Borderlands so far?
Lyara: They’re definitely an interesting area. No lack of interesting things to be found.
MacKenzie: Response
Alroyo took a sip of her drink, she barely spent any time in the Borderlands and she had an injury to back it up. She didn’t know if fun was the word she’d use to describe it, but she couldn’t think of another word.
Lyara: Your ship is at least very friendly. Everyone I’ve met so far has been really nice. ::Beat:: Hell, Salkath practically saved my life on Ura Nateos III.
MacKenzie: Response
He had carried her for what felt like kilometers when he only knew her by a name and rank. It was the logical thing to do in that case but it still felt really nice to have an officer go that quite literal, extra mile for her. The sense of community she felt on the ship from a handful of people she barely knew, along with one good friend, helped her adjust to being so far from home.
Lyara: It’s definitely helped with adjusting to being on a ship. I’ve never been this far from Bajor before.
Yes, she had traveled to Earth but it was a second home to her as her step father grew up there. And that was still somewhat in the alpha quadrant. She was on the other side of the Federation from Bajor which was still a little hard to believe for her.
MacKenzie: Response
