(( Captain’s Ready Room – Deck 1, USS Artemis-A ))
MacKenzie sat with her legs propped up over the corner desk,
one crossed over the other at the ankle, dangling over the side. She was casually
reading through the latest round of ship reports from various department heads,
each providing assessments of their departments’ readiness. …including a snooty
line from their interim chief medical officer about how he’s already ready for
her to find a replacement.
She exhaled a small dismissive breath through her nose.
Of them all, Morgan was the most capable – certainly more so than Sadar
would have ever been. Still, she understood the physician’s desire to focus on surgical
matters and the want to have someone else assume the role of people manager
Chief Medical Officer. It didn’t seem as though he’d be getting what he wanted soon
– at least for the present moment, there didn’t seem to be anyone Starfleet had
available in this part of the galaxy who could fit the bill.
At least, no one she would trust to do the job better than Kyle Morgan.
Another dismissive exhale.
MacKenzie continued to lazily scroll through the document when an alert beeped
on her desktop monitor, causing her to plant her feet on the floor and sit up
more straight in her chair. As she looked to the screen, the Priority One
display captured her attention with a greater degree of seriousness than it had
originally. Accessing the message, she started to read the message. Right away,
the first line caught her attention.
SUBJECT: Temporary Reassignment of Fleet Captain Addison MacKenzie
MacKenzie: Sorry, what?
She continued to make her way through the message, her eyes getting more and
more narrow, her face gradually shifting from surprise and dismay to concern
and anxious. In short, Starfleet was pulling her from command for temporary
reassignment. There was a fatal infection of unknown origin sweeping through
the population on Cetus III. Given its status as a member world, Starfleet
Medical felt it prudent to gather some of the fleet’s foremost medical minds to
try to not only discover its genesis but also produce a vaccine before the
virus had an opportunity to spread to other worlds.
Her reassignment was effective immediately.
And command of the Artemis was to be temporarily
handed over to someone that neither she nor the crew knew very well: their new
first officer, Ava Munro.
She deactivated her monitor and sat back in her chair, her head shaking slowly
as she did so.
There was a lot of work to do.
…And news to deliver.
