(( Chief Operations Officer’s office, Deck 5, USS Artemis-A ))
Bergmen had taken a seat and was taking notes with a stylus as Glim offered his musings on what it took to make a great officer in Starfleet, as well as putting the worlds to rights in the meantime.
Vel: ::letting out a low breath:: Pfffft, well, I guess the first thing to cultivate as a senior officer is a gut feeling that you can trust. ::he slapped his somewhat corpulent belly:: Trust your gut, and you can’t go wrong.
Ollie nodded in agreement, and Glim smirked, picking up yet another blood truffle biscuit.
Bergmen: That sounds so reasonable as well as straightforward.
Bergmen finished writing the note he was taking and turned his gaze back to Glim, who took a hefty bite out of the biscuit he was eating, some of the gooey inside dripping onto his chin.
Bergmen: What do you think, in your opinion, brings success while building motivation for teamwork in your subordinates?
Glim considered his response as he chewed thoughtfully on the biscuit, wiping the back of his hand across his chin to remove the spot of blood truffle sauce that had landed there. When he saw that Bergmen’s eyes were firmly downcast on the PADD in his hands, he quickly licked the sauce off the back of his hand.
Vel: ::gruffly:: Not being their friend - being their boss first, and letting them seek friendship elsewhere.
Ollie's stylus glided across the PADD screen. His eyes, wide with excitement, annoyed Glim - he was just a minor head of Ops, why on Tellar was this man taking his opinions as gospel? It had started as a little flattering, but the longer this went on, the more annoyed Glim was likely to get.
Bergmen: What qualities are lacking among today’s leaders around you, sir?
Glim pointed a stubby forefinger in Bergmen’s direction.
Vel: Too many of our department heads are too chummy with their underlings. Everyone seems to think that makes the job easier, but it can cause hesitation at important moments. Then there’s the ability to know when to leave, nobody has that anymore.
Glim looked from his biscuits to Bergmen then back to the biscuits, but his hint was firmly ignored.
Bergmen: What are the most important traits to look for when choosing the team you will work with?
Glim narrowed his eyes a moment.
Vel: Reading between the lines, and understanding the subtext of what a superior is trying to tell you, as well as being good at independent working, that sort of thing.
Bergmen: Response
Vel: Let me ask you a question, Bergmen - have you got any independent working you could be getting on with?
Bergmen: Response

"You know, I'm really easy to get along with most of the time, but I don't like bullies and I don't like threats, and I don't like you, Culluh. You can try and stop us from getting to the truth but I promise you that if you do I will respond with all the 'unique technologies' at my command." - Kathryn Janeway
