((Richards-Dakora Family Quarters, Deck 6 - USS Artemis))
Cole: There’s nothing better than a baby’s laugh. Well, unless you hear it in an empty corridor. Then it’s horrifying.
Sam laughed and almost choked on the pastry.
Richards: If I die eating this… You can tell everyone I died happy.
Cole: I mean … there are worse ways to go.
Grabbing some water, Sam sat down on the couch with a bit of a huff.
Richards: Yeah. Leave the twins with their less than present dad? Sounds too sad. ::beat:: They can become the ship's babies. A community effort. You can teach them to protect themselves, Tho’Bi can teach them to fix things, Roy can teach them to fix themselves. ::Chuckling:: And MacKenzie can teach everyone to fear them.
Cole: I’m more than sure, we would make sure they are taken care of … in the event such a thing would happen.
Nat moved Aven into his little chair and grabbed the other pastry for herself.
Cole: ::sitting down next to Sam:: Everyone thinks being strong means holding it together. Sometimes… it’s just saying “yeah, that hurt” and letting someone see it.
You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to, I’ll still be here either way.
For the most part, Sam had gotten away with just simply telling people Talos was “away on Betazed for his Nobility responsibilities”. Most people took that and let it be. Truth was, deep down, Sam was sad, hurt and a little bit angry.
Richards: Talos made a lot of promises, you know? To be here, take care of them. Watch them grow up. ::shaking her head:: So far… It’s just not what I had hoped for.
Cole: Sounds like he realized he couldn’t measure up to the challenge of fatherhood, and bolted before he was caught holding his d… ::raising a fist to her mouth as if to plug it::
Sam chuckled as Natasha paused to let a breath out through her nose.
Cole: I’m sorry Sam, that really sucks, absentee fathers tend to bring out … harsh reactions from me.
Richards: That’s the crazy thing. I never would have expected this from him. His own history with his own father… He never wanted to be that guy. ::shrugging and looking towards the babies:: Maybe it's genetic, something deeply rooted that even science can’t explain.
Cole: I am your friend, and if there is anything I can do to help, I’m your girl. Need a distraction, ::waves her hand:: need a partner for creative problem solving, ::waves her hand::
The emotions began to surface, more than she had allowed them too since the twins had been born.
Richards: ::Shaking her head:: I just don’t get it. How could he want to be away from them? Away from me? ::voice trembling:: Was it something I did that made him want to be gone so often? ::Looking to Nat:: Maybe he doesn’t love me anymore. ::Glancing down to the pastry:: Are you going to eat that?
Cole: ::laughing as she handed her the second plate:: of course you can have this one too.
Sam took the plate and wiped away a tear before taking a bite of the pastry.
Richards: Not many people get the honor of watching me cry and shame eat in the same setting. Count yourself lucky.
Cole: Response
Sam laughed. Let the tears flow. And eat. Only a true friend would stay by her side when she was falling apart in such a glorified way.
Richards: I’m sorry you had to be the unfortunate one to watch me turn into such a mess. ::Shaking her head:: I haven’t really talked about it much.
Cole: Response
She tried to let her mind focus on the delicious pastry instead of the crushing weight of her reality.
Richards: Thank you. For being here.
Cole: Response
