(( Holodeck 3 – Deck 3, USS Artemis-A ))

The advice was interesting, and made a good deal of sense. It wasn’t too difficult to follow, and Vhysa’lia tried to put it into practice. With the additional help and adjustment from Lt. Storm, Vhysa’lia felt ready to take on another simulation, and hopefully get one step closer to checking this Phaser Certification off her list.

Vhysa’lia: I think I’m ready for another simulation, unless you’ve got any more advice?

Storm: Not yet. :: Reinitiate her PADD and sets up the next scenario.::  Let’s try this one.

Vhysa’lia: What’s the goal?

The holodeck shifted to a recreation of the mess hall, a room that Vhysa’lia was remarkably familiar with. Even when she’d felt somewhat self-conscious about the paste that made up her diet, she’d still forced herself to be around the rest of the crew at mealtimes. If that was the final straw for someone accepting her, they weren’t a good candidate for furthering relations anyways.

Storm:  Okay.  Obviously, what you’ve got here is the mess hall on the Artemis.  What’s going to happen is you’re going to see different people change from themselves into specters of them selves like this.

The exercise description made them feel slightly uneasy. These were her colleagues, not targets.

Storm:  When you see that, that is your target.  You’ll gain points for hitting the correct target.  You’ll lose points for hitting someone who is not a target.

It didn’t seem like there really was an out, unfortunately. She needed to get this certification done, and Lt. Storm wanted to impart knowledge via strange friendly-fire simulations.

Vhysa’lia: If you’re say so…

Storm:  Ready?

Vhysa’lia: As, I’ll ever be, Lieutenant.

They didn’t expect they’d be at all ready to take on representations of the people that they had come to know and consider co-workers, if not already acquaintances or friends in some instances. But, there was little to do but play along, as the program fired up, animating the figures in the mess hall. She tightened her grip on the phaser, just as instructed, before firing.

Vhysa’lia: I hope this isn’t some sort of trick simulation, sir.

Storm: Response

They continued, trying their best to hit the “targets” as they appeared, flickering from the usual people into the white, slightly spectral versions of themselves.

Vhysa’lia: Firing on people in the mess hall. It just feels wrong…?

Even as they spoke, they continued trying to complete the simulation, firing on the “ghosts” with the best of their ability. With moving, humanoid targets, she wasn’t as accurate as she had been earlier.

Storm: Response

Vhysa’lia: So, did I pass…? ::uneasy laugh:: I think the whole premise threw me off.

Storm: Response
