to USS Artemis-A – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((USS Artemis, deck 6, Elysium))
Vitor walked to the Elysium for another coffee and a small break. He had his uniform sleeves rolled above his elbow and a bothering shoulder pain.
The aftermath and recovery from Frontier Day had proven challenging. It’s been days since they… Survived.
Vitor wasn’t able to call it a victory. Not even a pyrrhic victory.
It was survival, plain and simple.
Even in their concerted efforts to infiltrate the Federation, seize the Fleet, and ultimately assimilate everyone, the Borg and the Changelings have failed.
But the blows and the scars would take years to fully heal.
Vitor had eventually scheduled a few days off, to visit Jonathan and Thera in Andoria. And gather the rest of the family, parents and grandparents on Earth.
But until then he was helping up as much as he could.
Tactical was almost in order. He found the eight still missing. Of those two were killed, four seriously injured. His department had four members killed.
Vitor felt compelled to add a personal message as their department chief to the next of kin.
Now he had still five seriously wounded that likely he would not see any time soon.
Six had turned in their letter of resignation from Starfleet. He fully understood them and discussed if any wished to reconsider.
They didn’t.
He had given a dozen LOA’s to those more needed and organised four shifts so his people could rotate more. It would be a slow rebuild, but they all needed it.
So in all his department lost ten members. Considering all that happened, it wasn’t that bad.
What was bad, or what he felt bad for, was that he was dealing with it coldly and rationally.
In that frame of mind he noticed Commander Hopper in one of the tables.
He had heard what happened to her after they split in Sickbay. He wondered how she was doing, not quite able to read her expression from where he was standing.
Vitor picked up his espresso cup and walked to her. He cleared his throat to get her attention, smiled and lowered his head respectfully.
Silveira: Commander, it's good to see you. Do you mind if I sit?
Hopper: Response
He sat down his coffee cup and took a seat next to her. Vitor leaned back and smiled at her. His first thought was to be polite and understanding. Say all the right things.
And he almost did.
So, true to character he ended up saying something completely different. And certainly inadequate.
Silveira: So I heard you stuck around a little longer. Got into another fistfight?
Hopper: Response
Not unexpectedly he shrugged, stirring his coffee with the spoon.
Silveira: Not the most pleasant experience I know. But you made it through. As that old expression goes “Just get back on the horse and ride the same path where you fell”.
Hopper: Response
Vitor grinned and took a long sip from his expresso slowly putting it down and learning back.
Silveira: Isn’t risk part of our business? It doesn’t do you any good if you dwell too much into that near death experience. ::He leaned back and opened his arms widely, in his usual theatrical manner:: But I am a simple Tactical Chief not a Counselor. Just offering friendly advice and an apology for literally handling you like I did in the jeffries.
Hopper: Response
