(( Cargo Bay 1 – Deck 11, USS Artemis-A ))
Enlisting the aid of Vahljeahn was able to smooth any nervousness on behalf of the Boraxian medics, who seemed more able to concentrate on being helpful when assured that they weren’t expected to answer to the Federation’s standards of medical care. And while their medical terminology was practically non-existent, some of them did start to show a modicum of experience with clocking and making note of medical issues in their fellow Yurum.
Medic #1: Uhh, w-well, Buíre - that’s the one on Bed 7 - has had difficulty breathing for a while? They don’t seem ill or anything, but ever since we boarded New Hope, they’ve been struggling a bit.
Vahljeahn: It might be the exposure to your own atmosphere. And the lack of the Illumination we use on New Hope. If needed, we can have a word with Buíre.
Tamio made a note, but evidently the Doctors were already on top of it.
Bancroft: ::not looking up from his patient:: Chief Morgan, seven’s one of yours. Do you have hands, or do you want Brenn?
Morgan: I can-
Before Chief Morgan had had the chance to go and address Buire’s condition, however, Ensign Bancroft found yet another thing that didn’t make sense about this whole situation. They could start making a long list of all the questions that had come up thus far, and unfortunately, hadn’t gotten a whole lot of answers for any of them.
Bancroft: ::frowning at his tricorder:: Vahljeahn… do your people have some sort of self-regenerative ability? This injury is healing far faster than I’d expect given the treatment I’m administering. ::a beat, glancing over:: For that matter, you healed remarkably fast yourself – now that I think about it.
Ensign Bancroft’s query summoned not only Vahljeahn, but also Tamio and Chief Morgan to his side.
Bancroft: Inflammatory suppression is off the charts in this patient. Internal wound closure is progressing faster than this protoplaser alone should account for. Something’s boosting this.
Vahljeahn: Now we see what you are asking now. Yes, we Yurum have some innate skills. Although they are not exactly… ::they looked a little confused:: Self-regenerative as you say
Tamio heard Chief Morgan’s disbelief clearly.
Morgan: Innate… Skills…
K’Wara: That deal with treating injuries?
Bancroft: Responses
Vahljeahn folded their arms in front of them, and Tamio had to resist the urge to mimic the behaviour. Luirétt’s communication had made it clear that the Yurum had no intentions of deliberately keeping the Artemis’ officers in the dark, and yet the Yurum seemed very perplexing by their very nature.
Vahljeahn: One of the reasons we are so protected, and restrained, by the other Boraxians is exactly that. Our skills can help others in dealing with loss, injuries and pain.
Morgan: That sounds extraordinary…
Bancroft: Response
Tamio raised a hand in a halting motion, needing to get a question in before everyone said ‘okay, hunky-dory’.
K’Wara: If you have healing abilities, how come the medics were talking about relying on medical machines to deal with the injuries?
Vahljeahn: It is hard to explain, we were never given the opportunity to learn about it.
Morgan: I don’t understand. You weren’t given the opportunity?
Vahljeahn/Bancroft: Responses
Finally, something that was easier to grasp.
K’Wara: ... Well, that’s starting to paint a picture.
Chief Morgan nodded in agreement.
Morgan: And that’s why you’re seeking asylum?
Vahljeahn/Bancroft: Responses
Tamio was about to ask another question, when their commbadge chirped at them. It was hardly anything unusual - their duty as a member of OPS was to function as the coordinating element during situations such as these - so they simply nodded in a quick courtesy.
K’Wara: Hm. Excuse me a moment.
Withdrawing from the conversation, Tamio still heard the next question posed by Chief Morgan. A very good one.
Morgan: So, why not just tell us about it?
Vahljeahn/Bancroft: Responses
Tamio tapped their commbadge to receive the incoming communication.
K’Wara: =/\= LT K’Wara. =/\=
The words that got transmitted to them added about a gazillion questions to Tamio’s list, but also did answer a few. Most notably, what it was that the Yurum had been running from. With a slightly elevated speed, Tamio returned to the group, stepping closer to Chief Morgan to speak to him in a hushed tone.
The last thing they needed was for these particular news to spread to all of the injured Yurum in Sickbay and cause a panic.
K’Wara: ::quiet voice:: The Boraxians are here.
