((Holodeck 1 - Deck 2 - USS Artemis-A ))
Imril: Doctor Bancroft and I split up when we reached a new cavern. Which gave me twice as many shadows, twice as many sources of movement, to be mindful of. When I saw a dark patch that didn't match the surroundings, I had to confirm I was aiming at the right person before I fired. I needed to open myself up to being shot at in order to do that. It could have gone either way.
Storm: That’s often the moment where the mission rises or falls, and you’re right. It can go either way. Fortunately for you, it broke very much in your favor.
Bancroft: Response
Alex’s fingers tapped various boxes on the PADD.
Storm: I’ve sent your official phaser qualification to you and to the CTO. This will last you for a year, after which you’ll need to do another recertification.
Imril wasn’t sure if her words applied to only themself, or both of the students.
Imril: Acknowledged. Thank you, Sir.
Bancroft: Response
Storm: Unless you have any other questions, you’re dismissed, Lieutenant.
'Lieutenant,' singular. There was no doubting that Imril was the sole person whom Storm had finished with.
When an instructor kept a student behind and let the rest go, it was usually for one of two reasons. Said student had so impressed the teacher that they’d singled them out for further mentoring… Or… They had done so poorly that a private talking-to was deemed to be in order.
This situation appeared to be the latter.
Imril gave a quick look to their friend, wondering if they could help him out somehow by staying. But a dismissal was a dismissal. And Roy would gain nothing from their continued presence in whatever came next.
Imril: ::To Storm:: Aye, Sir. Thank you for your time, Sir. ::To Bancroft:: Later, Roy.
Bancroft: Response
Imril turned and headed for the exit. Just before the doors opened, they heard a soft exhale come from Storm. They paused, chose not to look back, and walked into the corridor.
But they didn't go far. They found a seating area nearby the holodeck. Far enough away to appear to be prying, but close enough to hear the doors when they opened. In case Roy needed to talk to someone after getting bad news.
Then again, with Imril out of the way, maybe the two of them would just end up flirting with each other some more. Who could tell?
End For Imril
