to USS Artemis-A – StarBase 118 Star Trek PBEM RPG
((Jefferies tube, deck 4, USS Karnack))
They evaded the thing and ended up in one of the Karnack's jefferies. Something felt wrong with him, he was unusually uncomfortable.
Nan’s hand on his cheek had helped. He took a deep breath and gave one last squeeze on Nan’s hand before letting go and looking at Alex and Roy.
Silveira: We need to find a way to keep them out… All of them… Water, cold anything we can use… The fire supressors… Something…
Bancroft: ::deep in thought:: Compressed gas… released rapidly…
Jovenan: There’s not much water anywhere in here. The replicators are probably off for good, and a ship of this size wouldn’t have a cetacean ops.
Storm: What? Compressed gas?
Vitor looked at Alex and Roy.
Storm: Roy, what about compressed gas?
Vitor slowed his breathing as his heart beats increased. Standing there was really starting to bother him. He twitched and moved as if he could squeeze from there like a snail or a leach.
The one thing that was keeping him under control was Nan’s smell.
Her hair smelled so good. A little dirtier than usual, but that kind of brought some flavour to it.
Silveira: We hate the cold and water…. If we combine or improvise something like that we can use it.
Bancroft: We’re near Main Engineering. Jefferies tubes are spiderwebbed with support nodes – there has to be a damage control locker close. ::eyes sharpening:: One that has handheld fire suppressors inside it.
Jovenan: Hm? Um, yes. The automatic system with force fields wouldn’t be functional, but the handhelds are also a backup system that any ship has to have before it’s cleared to fly, even for the scrapper.
Vitor shut his eyes again. He took another deep breath and forced himself to focus.
They needed to find an answer, a reply to the Beasts.
Silveira: That could work…
Storm: Could it really be that easy?
Bancroft: Exactly. They’re simple – liquefied CO2 under pressure, nothing fancy, which is exactly why it works when nothing else does. The stream comes out cold enough to bite.
Jovenan: The discharge is something like -75 to -80 degrees Celsius. Even if it was the water and not the cold they’re afraid of, that temperature has to cause frostbites.
Storm: And hardening of small appendages or teeth, and blinding of the eyes.
Again he breathed slowly, forcing himself to calm down. He glanced at Nan, his inspiration, his motivation.
Silveira: I think it’s a good plan
Bancroft: Agreed. Let’s introduce those things to consequences.
Jovenan: Okay. Let’s move. There has to be a damage control closet somewhere in here.
Vitor nodded and started crawling, if his memory wasn’t wrong he was heading in the right direction.
Storm: Hopefully it’s not far…
Bancroft: Response
From behind he heard Alex but kept pushing forward. The jefferies felt tighter than before, but muscle memory, survival instincts and most important of all, the will to protect Nan… And the others kept Vitor motivated.
He stopped near one of the nodes and Nan joined him. She popped it open and turned the small canister around.
Jovenan: Seems to be intact. ::hands the extinguisher over:: It creates a stream and a cloud of very cold gas, but it has a limited range, and it won’t stop the momentum. If the predator is jumping or running towards you, it might collide with you before it realises it’s hurting.
Alex moved in, took it and passed it to Doc Roy.
Storm: So we need something to slow them down before they get to us, giving us the advantage. That might be possible.
Silveira: We pick our spot to make a stand. We might have enough places to ambush it.
Bancroft: Response
Nan turned to them.
Jovenan: What’s next? We need to start working on our actual task, but is it better to wait until the predators find us, or do we, um, start hunting for them or luring them with fire or something?
Storm: I’ll defer to Commander Silveria’s expertise, but I think we need at least one or two more of those extinguishers before we do anything.
Vitor nodded. The more extinguishers they had the better the odds.
Silveira: I agree, I would rather not risk it failing or run out of juice quickly.
Bancroft: Response
Storm: My concern is that if we try to attract them, we might get a whole lot more than we can handle. If we only had one opening to defend, it would be more possible, but with an entire corridor and four holes in the outer walls? That’s a lot of ground to defend, and we could end up with a friendly fire scenario, even. Or do you disagree, Commander?
Alex looked at him. He nodded and tipped his head in the outer hull direction, on the other side of the tube.
Silveira: No, not at all. That’s why we need to find a good place to set up. We know one is out there. But there could be more.
Bancroft/Jovenan: Response
Storm: The first tactical rule of thumb before planning a major offensive is to have solid intel. That’s just not something we can get in this case. We’re walking blind.
Alex was right, but he couldn’t see a better option.
Silveira: I know, but we can’t really run a proper recon, we will need to adapt and improvise.
Bancroft/Jovenan: Response
Storm: I think our best bet is if we can get the majority of the holes closed up quickly, and there was only one way they could come at us, then we could try to draw them into an ambush, but not before then. That would be suicide.
Alex paused, almost as if she hadn’t finished her though.
Vitor arched an eyebrow.
Storm: And dying today doesn’t fit into my schedule.
Vitor tipped his head. Alex again nailed it. A sudden anger began to brew inside him.
He glanced at Nan before turning to Alex and Doc Roy.
Silveira: Not today… Neither tomorrow. And we will get this box match of a ship back up there, even if we have to grow wings and push it.
Bancroft/Jovenan: Response
He looked forward, and close by was the jeffries tube access hatch. They could either backtrack and return to the starting point, or keep pushing forward.
He pointed to the extinguisher.
Silveira: OK, first get a few more of these. At least two more. ::He looked around, searching for another node:: Then I say we follow Lieutenant Storm's plan. We get the stuff and start welding down the holes. Always keeping surveillance and safe. The more we close the less they come.
He turned to Nan. If she still outranked him he would have said it as a suggestion, but Vitor realized he had sounded a little bossy. One thing they always managed was to keep professional, even if he slipped slightly before when he needed her comfort.
Silveira: If you agree, Commander.
Jovenan/Storm/Bancroft: Response
Vitor nodded and smiled at them. He crawled to the next node.
Silveira: I am not sure if our little climb has brought us to deck three yet. Do any of you got a better look at the Karnack’s deck plant?
Jovenan/Storm/Bancroft: Response
They opened another node to retrieve the other extinguisher.
A sharp headache made him wince and shut down his eyes.
Visions of different parts of the ship flashed quickly in his mind as he shook his head.
When Vitor opened them he wrinkled his forehead and raised his hand.
Silveira: I’m OK… Just a flashback or something… That transporter might have done a number on me, but we have things to do. Let’s move we got to plank these holes and kick some Things up if they bother us again.
Jovenan/Storm/Bancroft: Response
