(( Counselor’s Office – Deck 7, USS Artemis-A ))
The only Kobali counselor in Starfleet. That was quite the moniker, and Gila hoped that Crewman Vhysa’lia would take pride in that. She also hoped that this was the beginnings of a new chapter in the Federation’s legacy in the Delta Quadrant, that soon new and varied species would see the value in joining this ludicrous organization. More reserved people to outweigh the crazy gusto that the Federation leadership seemed plagued by was never a bad thing.
Though, to be fair, Gila wasn’t so certain she could count the Kobali amongst the ‘reserved’ ones, doing by Crewman Vhysa’lia’s demeanor thus far.
Vhysa’lia: So, when can we get started?
Eager to start doing her duties - which was a commendable attitude - Gila referenced the PADD in her hands to check how much of the counseling programme had been finalized. The medical department had organized crew rosters, ascertained what counselors would be best suited for assisting with processing the different experiences from Frontier Day, but in truth, it was Operations who would be handling the actual timetables. The medical department did have a great amount of say in it, though, particularly when it came to ascertaining which crew had most immediate need of the programme’s effects.
Sadar: W-Well, as soon as you’re settled, I should think. I can see that Commander Adea - our Chief Medical Officer - has recommended one of the Ensigns for an accelerated timetable, so I suggest calling in Ensign Kel for your first session.
Vhysa’lia: Ensign Kel? I’m not sure I’ve had the pleasure to run into this officer yet aboard the Artemis. What can you tell me about them, and their case?
What could Gila say? What should she say? She was a believer in the adverse effects of the Rosenthaler effect - by giving her own opinion on the Ensign’s character and struggles, she would unintentionally color the new counselor’s first impressions - but she also believed that counseling was most successful when both mental health and general healthcare providers cooperated.
Sadar: Ensign Kel is a Bajoran and Vulcan hybrid, security officer. He was assimilated into the Collective under the designation Ten of Ten, but has no recollection of the time he was assimilated. Beyond that, I’ll allow you to make your own observations.
Vhysa’lia: No recollection… ::taps her chin, looking off as she ponders this:: That’ll hopefully be easier than if he remembered it all. The ones that remember more are always harder to help. ::pause:: I'll check over his files for more details, when I have the chance.
Gila bit the inside of her cheek to prevent herself from going into a medical debate on the patient’s case. She knew that Ensign Kel himself was entirely preoccupied with his lack of memories, and Cmdr. Adea’s notes from their appointment suggested a concern that the Ensign was repressing the trauma rather than truly not remembering anything, but she was certain that the crewman would consider these dimensions of the case.
Sadar: Excellent. I’ll send word to Cmdr. Adea that his recommendation will be followed up on...
Vhysa’lia: Are there any other patients on this accelerated timescale that I should know about? Or will I get more as I get properly settled into the ship?
Gila referenced the PADD briefly, but mostly out of habit. She was quite certain no more priority cases had been submitted in the five minutes since she last checked.
Sadar: None that I can see... For the moment, get Ensign Kel an appointment, and Operations will get in touch when the schedules have been finalized. If any other crewmen require immediate attention, the counseling department will receive a direct recommendation from the medical team.
Vhysa’lia: And this office, it’s shared with the counseling staff? Or can I take meetings with patients elsewhere on the ship?
The logistics of an intensive programme - plus this many additional members to a usually small department - was testing the Luna class’ capacity. As a science vessel intended for research and exploration, it wasn’t equipped to handle this much collected trauma over such a short period, and Gila couldn’t help but wonder whether this was the Wheel testing the crew of the Artemis - ascertaining when their sanity would snap and devolve into anarchy.
But that wasn’t the question posed to her, and she dismissed the ridiculous notion.
Sadar: ::looks around the office:: W-Well, we usually run a very small counseling department, so one office has been enough thus far... I’m looking into the possibility of appropriating one or two Holodecks for counseling sessions until the programme is over, but it’s not determined yet.
She imagined that being able to switch up the locale of the counseling offered with the holographic capabilities of the Holodecks would be helpful, and as she was eager to have the counseling programme succeed, she steeled her resolve to make that communication to Operations at first available opportunity.
Vhysa’lia: ::nodding, smiling with a light twinkle in her eye:: Now that we’ve squared away everything regarding my duty… Is there anything I can elaborate on for you? Any questions you have for me ::pause:: or about me?
This question blindsided Gila thoroughly, as her body language froze up.
oO How does the revivification process work biologically? Why did you choose to come to the Federation? Has your experience with counseling non-Kobali been very different from counseling your own people? Is ‘your own people’ the appropriate moniker, or is that an unfortunate wording? How is- Oo
Sadar: Oh, uhh- ::shifts uncomfortably in the chair:: N-Not particularly... Uhh- ::refers to the PADD before her:: D-Did you receive a physical check-up on the Kitty Hawk prior to boarding the Artemis?
oO Deflect. Deflect. Don’t antagonize the new crewman. Oo
Vhysa'lia: Response
Sadar: I see. ::pause:: Your own duties take precedence, but it probably goes without saying that you need to be mindful of your own health as well. ::face grows grim:: You’re going to be very busy…
Gila wished it wasn’t so, but then, she knew that some people thrived with a busy schedule. She counted herself among them.
Vhysa'lia: Response
Sadar: A healthy work-life balance is mandatory, particularly for our counseling department in these coming weeks, so please keep that in mind. ::considers:: And while I know you’re here on a temporary basis, you are a member of the Medical Division on the Artemis for the duration, so please, make sure to utilize our facilities, both for recreation and for any research you might want to do.
