to Main Artemis
((Matter Replication Lab, Deck 15 - USS Artemis))

For a Vulcan on shore leave, having access to a laboratory onboard that catered to one's area of expertise was as close as they could get to relaxation. A Luna class Federation starship was not quite state of the art, but it was close, and it offered advantages that older or more austere classes did not. This lab, right next to Main Engineering, was one of those advantages.

Salkath was, at the core of his training, a specialist in replicators and transporters. Matter energy conversion was his research of choice, and the rest of his engineering acumen was built off that specialized knowledge. As any good engineer would, Salkath considered it an honor were he one day published for his work in this field, and as such he was known to use a fair bit of his spare time researching new avenues of matter energy conversion technologies. That the Artemis had a laboratory to allow him hands-on experience and experimentation rather than the somewhat more crude method of holodeck approximations was, to Salkath, one of the reasons why he had pursued his transfer to this vessel. A similar facility would be more likely to be found on an outpost or starbase, and though the engineer would accept such a posting if he were required to, he still considered working among the stars to be beneficial to his acquisition of knowledge and experience. So, here he was, and here he was content to spend the majority of his shore leave.

Yellir: =/\= Commander Salkath— at your earliest I request your presence in my office. =/\=

Salkath looked up from the circuitry he was studying. He did not need to query the sender nor the computer for confirmation about who was hailing him. He recognized the voice of his Yelikan superior officer and had been anticipating this summons ever since he had sent a request to formally report for duty.

Salkath: =/\= Aye, Lieutenant. I am nearby in the matter replication lab. I will report shortly. =/\=

Yellir: =/\= Very good! I shall see you soon Commander. =/\=

Salkath: =/\= Understood. Salkath out. =/\=

It was exceedingly easy, considering his location, for Salkath to replicate a PADD to bring along with him. He took a moment to download his transfer orders, alongside his service record, to pass along to the chief engineer. Content with the state of his research for the day, Salkath saved his recent efforts and secured the lab before heading out.

((Chief Engineer’s Office, Deck 15 - USS Artemis))

It was difficult to approach the chief engineer's office on most any starship without being noticed by its occupant. By design, the office was meant to be able to see out over the workspaces designated to it, all the way to the beating powerplant of the ship itself, the warp reaction assembly. Similar to a chief medical officer's office in Sickbay, and for the same reasons, it was important for a chief engineer to be able to see all and react accordingly. This office was the same, allowing Lt Yellir to fully oversee the department she was responsible for. Therefore, Salkath did not need to knock to garner her attention, she could see him approach.

Salkath: Lieutenant Yellir, thank you for making time to conduct this interview.

The Vulcan nodded slightly in deference while still maintaining the parade rest stance he had assumed since coming to a stop in the office's doorway.

Yellir: response

Salkath: As it may... ::he approached and offered out the PADD with his transfer orders and an abridged version of his service record::  Our recent temporal... shenanigans have meant that my full service record hasn't been updated as expected. I took the liberty of making a list for you.

The list was succinct, noting the Starfleet vessels he had served on over his career. For a Vulcan, it wasn't a long career yet, but then he was relatively young at 56. It had been ten years since graduation from the Academy, with satisfactory if unremarkable engineering tenures on four different vessels during that time. His promotions had been earned not for remarkable accomplishments, but rather for proficiency. Compared to his earlier work on Vulcan vessels, however, he found his time in Starfleet to be preferable.

Yellir: response

Salkath: It goes without saying, Lieutenant, I welcome any questions you may have.

Hey may even have some questions of his own. This office was uncharacteristically neat for an engineer's office. The currency of any engineer was PADDs and diagnostic equipment, passed from hand to hand at excessive rates. A chief's office was usually littered with both, and Lt Yellir's was conspicuously void of both in normal volumes. Perhaps shore leave compels her to organize?

Yellir: response

Salkath: If I may deviate slightly first, ::with a raised eyebrow of interest:: Your candle is most intriguing. Does it hold cultural or religious significance?

It was the one most obvious nod to individualism in the room, an ornamentation that stood out in its brightly hued prominence in an otherwise mostly utilitarian room. Salkath was no stranger to the importance of candles and incense to theological and meditative self-reflection, and was curious to see it here.

Yellir: response
