Vitor shook his head and leaned back. It was only fair that it was his turn to be in the spotlight.

Silveira: Not that anyone in the family recalls. I admit Tito, who is a bit older, was an inspiration. That and the fact nobody in my close family wanted me to join. ::Vitor grinned and winked.:: You know how it is when we are young and rebellious, thinking we can write the next book in Starfleet. I realized I wanted to serve and help. Protect those who can’t.

Cole: ::nodding:: I understand that. I’m of the same mindset.

His smile dimmed slightly. How much advice would he tell to his young self if he could.
Not that he might take them, time had proven he only learned when he made the mistake, no matter how much warning he had.

And not always at first.

Silveira: Well the spirit, the desire to serve and help, and sacrifice if needed didn’t change. In fact with all my years of experience it got bigger. But there is one huge difference now.

Cole: ::raising an eyebrow as she sipped more coffee:: What’s that?

Vitor smiled more seriously and leaned forward.

Silveira: Now I don’t try to be the next Starfleet Legend. I don’t try to… To write the book, if you know the expression.
I learned from experience and mistakes that what we really need to do is to learn what we have been taught, at the Academy and here. Learn from our experiences and learn from others. ::he smiled:: And aspired to be a Starfleet Officer.
If we do that, excellence will follow if we deserve it.

Cole: ::smiling:: Ever learning and working towards our best version of yourself.

Vitor smiled and nodded. Cole was a smart one.

Silveira: Exactly

Cole: I hate to cut our conversation short, but I should get ready for my shift.

Vitor shook his head and waved his hands.

Silveira: Please, it was a pleasure to chat with you. Thank you for coming.

Cole finished her coffee and stood up. She straightened her uniform before replying.

Cole: Thank you Sir. For the coffee, and the advice.

Vitor also stood up and nodded.

Silveira: Anytime Ensign.

Cole turned towards the door, but in one interesting detail picked her coffee and recycled it on the replicator on her way out.
Vitor smiled and when Cole left he finally sat down.

It had been an interesting chat and he recalled he still had a few more Ensigns to meet.
The ever shifting and changes of the Fleet life had seen officers, friends, come and go.

Silveira: How long has it been since I graduated? And when I finished my first mission?

Vitor frowned. Before setting out to old memories he picked up his coffee cup.
It was already cold, but he finished it in one sip.

Taking a deep breath he stood up and walked out of his office.
Maybe it was best to look for the future instead of the past
