(( Primary Sickbay - Deck 7, USS Artemis-A))
There were times that Gila regretted choosing the medical path. Admittedly, those times were diminishing in frequency as her life went on. When she first boarded the Artemis-A as the newest member of the medical staff, she had such thoughts multiple times a day. At this junction, a full pip ‘smarter and wiser’ - or so she was supposed to believe - it had diminished to maybe once every other day. (Usually, it coincided with Crewman Voor’s obsessive compulsive visits, or one of Commander Adea’s sudden ‘inspections’ of her consultations).
Today? That thought was on repeat, and had been so since Scientist Richards had first mentioned the name of her partner in shame. Ever since Lt. Commander Dakora had joined the two of them in Sickbay, Gila had found herself pinballing between ‘uneasy junior officer’ and ‘responsible doctor’, which had mostly resulted in heightening her sense of panic.
Dakora: So, anyway. You were saying she’s– ::He caught himself.:: They are fine, then?
While Gila didn’t know that this was Lt. Commander Dakora’s attempt at helping her away from the brink of insubordination-panic, it did provide her an excuse to disregard her mental tirade at aliens and their illogical and frankly irresponsible exercise of their bodily autonomy, and instead focus on something decidedly more sterile.
Of course, it still had to do with her patients’ irresponsible behaviour, but she could at least deal with some of it.
Sadar: S-Since you mentioned that you may be closer to 11 weeks pregnant, I should warn you, Scientist Richards: you may experience a pain similar to, uhhh… ‘Period pains’? It’s your womb expanding and thus applying extra pressure to your ligaments and muscles. If this occurs, it’s perfectly normal, but if you experience any bleeding or excessive pain, please come to Sickbay as soon as possible. Understood?
S. Richards: Understood. ::squeezing Talos’ hand looking up at him:: Thank you for being here. I’m just glad they are okay.
Gila busied herself at the display, ensuring that she uploaded all the most recent scans to Scientist Richards’ medical charts, so the staff at Amity Outpost had a full understanding of it once she returned to the Delta Quadrant…
oO Delta Quadrant… Oo
Gila sighed. She’d have to ensure that the staff of whatever transportation Scientist Richards used to get there was briefed on her medical condition, and maintained regular scanning equipment for her use. Ideally, she shouldn’t go on inter-Quadrant travel in this condition. Were there any Federation ships going to the Delta Quadrant that would have certified medical staff aboard?
Dakora: Me too. ::His smile grew.:: It’s you and me against the universe now, Sammy.
Another sigh. She was certain that these two hadn’t even taken a moment to consider how troublesome co-parenting across Quadrant borders would be. The sheer length of the travel time between Amity Outpost and the Borderlands would mean that they would be absent from their designated postings for half a year at a time, if only to see each other once a year.
oO Not your problem. Not your problem. Not your problem. Let the aliens deal with alien problems- Oo
She was so pleased she hadn’t chosen to specialize in pediatrics, or worse, counseling.
S. Richards: ::Looking towards Gila:: Can we, maybe, see them again? ::shifting her gaze away:: If it’s not too much trouble…
Gila was brought out of her logging - or, well, another mental tirade - by Scientist Richards’ cautious request.
Dakora: Yeah, if it’s not too much trouble…
It wasn’t like she could refuse them - despite her reservations, she was Scientist Richards’ Doctor first and foremost at this moment - and as such, she had no reason to reject a request that would put the woman at ease.
Sadar: O-Of course. ::switches to the ultrasound display:: Here they are.
Gila brought a portable version of the wall-mounted display around so Scientist Richards could see the ultrasound without having to break her neck. The two expecting parents were utterly entranced with the image, and while Glia couldn’t relate - she’d never been a parent, and never would - she could understand the sensation of knowing that your life was never going to be the same.
She only hoped these two would turn that knowledge into a happy experience.
S. Richards: It still doesn’t quite feel real does it Talos? ::squeezing his hand:: We’re going to be parents.
Dakora: We are. I just hope I can figure out how to be a good one…
S.Richards: Response
Gila shuffled uncomfortably, busying herself with the medical logs again while Scientist Richards and Lt. Commander Dakora focused on the fetuses.
Dakora: We probably shouldn’t take up too much more of Doctor Sadar’s time. Genkos runs a tight sickbay. ::He flashed Gila a wry grin.:: Was there anything else, Doctor?
Gila truly wanted nothing more than to say ‘goodbye and thank you’ to the ... Couple? Individuals? Friends? Gila honestly had no idea how alien couplings worked in this kind of situation! Regardless, she felt like she was duty-bound to make one last offering, considering the information currently noted in Scientist Richards’ charts.
Sadar: Uhh... D-Dr. Rani’s notes don’t say whether she’s offered you to know their birth genders? W-Would you like to know?
Dakora/S.Richards: Response
Gila nodded slowly, turning to the display.
Sadar: W-Well, this one ::indicates fetus A:: will be born female, and this one ::indicates fetus B:: will be born male. Fraternal twins.
Dakora/S.Richards: Response
Sadar: Unfortunately, we still haven’t found a reliable science to determine how the hybrid nature of interspecies offs- babies, will manifest itself, so that much is difficult to say at this stage.
Dakora/S.Richards: Response
