(( Chief Operations Officer’s office, Deck 5, USS Artemis-A ))

Bergmen: Sir, I was referred to you by your peer, Commander Adea, as a great point of recommendation for a mentor. Sir, I would greatly appreciate any advice you could offer to support my goal of becoming a proper officer. I would greatly appreciate any guidance you could provide to assist me in my goal of becoming an officer. If your schedule is too occupied, I would also welcome recommendations for another suitable mentor you might suggest. Sir.

Ensign observed his superior closely, attempting to interpret the emotions displayed on his face and predict his possible reaction. However, he was at a loss—the incessant crunching of biscuits made it hard to gauge his true mood.

Vel: You’re an Ensign in Starfleet aboard a pretty highly respectable starship - what makes you think you’re not a “proper officer”?

Bergmen had foreseen that a question like this would come up during their discussion, so he answered quickly and without a hint of hesitation.

Bergmen: Sir, during our recent mission, I faced some mental hurdles. As an officer candidate with a background as a non-commissioned officer, I realized that my previous experiences influenced my mindset and actions. Although I tried to approach situations from an officer's perspective, following the training I received at Officer Candidate School, sometimes, I struggled with conflicting viewpoints, so, I would like to address this when I arise to more officer responsibility. Sir.

Vel: I see. So what you really mean is “how do I get a promotion, sir”?

While it wasn't precisely what he had said, Ollie understood where the commander was coming from with his idea. While his statement was somehow accurate, at least from a long shot perspective, it felt rather harsh to express it in such a straightforward manner. What did he really expect when he decided to ask a Tellarite?

Bergmen: From a career perspective, yes, sir. …

oO After all, the Starfleet brass nicknamed his track "crewperson to admiral", right? Oo

Yeah, that was a humorous thought. Admiral? Ollie certainly would not expect to advance beyond the rank of Lieutenant… he knew his limits.

Bergmen: … But being an officer is about leadership through the example and an inspiration. And a lot of paperwork. Being a non-commissioned team leader is more about technical specialization in the line of duty, more… directly done, I would say. Sir. I have no problem with administrative duties. So, I aim to cultivate the mindset essential for a leader-officer.

Vel: Response

Ollie nodded, revealing the PADD hidden behind his back.

Bergmen: Understood, sir. May I make notes?

Vel: Response
