((Main Engineering, Deck 15 - USS Artemis-A))
As the program ran, washing down the metal parts of its suit with the acid first, Gnai slowly forced the joints to move, exposing all the surfaces of the metal, as it pondered its (albeit short so far) journey through Starfleet, as well as the ensign’s (even shorter, and entirely unknown to it) one.
Gnai: Ensign, this hasn’t had the chance to get to know you much outside of missions. Are you interested in holo-programming outside of the context of engineering? For example, this spent a bit of time at the Academy learning how to holo-program for the purposes of entertainment.
Imril: I’ve never written a holonovel, persay. ::small laugh:: But I helped Lieutenant Silveira set up his holo-arcade. Have you visited it?
It had heard some clamor about the arcade in passing, but it hadn’t actually had the chance to visit it. It was too busy with other pursuits, like fixing its containment suit and the various little scientific projects that it found for itself to keep busy…
Gnai: Oh, no, this hasn’t! Good to hear that you’ve been helping with it.
Perhaps it would have to actually make an effort to “visit” the arcade in the holodeck, just to see how it was all put together in the program…
Imril: Thats’s been, no doubt, my biggest purely 'recreational’ build in a while. I had this other running project that’s maybe more educational? I haven't worked on it in a while, though. For lack of content to add to it.
Gnai: Oh, in what regard?
Imril: See, I kinda like to go holo-touring in recreations of lost cultures. Societies that have come and gone, for whatever reason. Earth Vikings, the original Xindi homeworld, the Hebetians of Cardassia, that sort of thing. The First Klingon Empire, though maybe that one’s not really ‘lost.’ I looked that up after Dr. Sadar took me on an away team to an archaeological site. But that’s usually just asking the computer to scoop up pre-sorted references from history books and spit out an experience. No real work on my part.
Now that sounded interesting, far more than the arcade (sorry to Lt. Silveira). Archeology wasn’t really one of Gnai’s strong suits, but seeing novel places and having new experiences certainly was something it was interested in.
Gnai: Still, it sounds like quite a project. Are there any historical programs that you’ve made yourself…?
Imril: When I wanted to do the same thing with my own history, at least the part of Bactrica’s past that I care to know more about, the ancient days long buried, I had to largely build the sim myself. Because no one else had done it before. No one had put all the little pieces together in a form that could be holosimmed.
It hadn’t heard them talk about Bactrica much before, or really anyone talk about it. Gnai had little experience with the planet or the people, a similar blindspot to the rest of the Federation it seemed.
Gnai: This understands… one of the small programs that this made when at the Academy was of Galador II, as few others in the Federation have much experience with the planet. ::beat:: It helped with the homesickness at times, a little.
Imril: Response
An idea popped into its mind as they spoke, and ripples of excitement passed over its filaments.
Gnai: Ensign, you’re interested in old cultures and places, as you’ve said… Would you be interested in helping this try and create a program recreating something truly ambitious?
Imril: Response
Gnai: Galadorans come from Galador II now, but in the past, eons ago… The original homeworld of Galador has long been destroyed, but it might be an interesting project to try and recreate it from histories passed down. ::beat:: If you would be interested and willing to partake in such a challenge with this.
