(( Holodeck 3 – Deck 3, USS Artemis-A ))
Same as always, she tried to greet most humanoids with a handshake. The grand majority had taken it in stride and appreciated the gesture. Some of the non-humanoid species, they’d taken to maybe offering a little bow, or nod of the head.
Storm: It’s nice to meet you too, Lieutenant. ::Alex tucked the PADD under her left arm:: I’m glad you contacted me about helping with your recert. It’s nice to get to meet new crew in a … I’d usually say a less formal situation, but this is formal enough. I guess I’d say a situation where we both have a purpose, so it feels less awkward. Anyway, have you had any phaser training between your last certification and this one?
Well, it hadn’t been exactly phaser training, per se, but self-defence in the face of Borg drones aboard the Kitty Hawk counted a little, they supposed. What was on hand was what she used, even if it wasn’t something she was as familiar with. But the general principles were roughly the same they’d gathered, point in the direction you want dealt with, and fire.
Vhysa’lia: I’ve had a bit… but it seems that the Starfleet systems would rather that I brush up on my skills anyways, at least to get it into their records that I won’t be completely useless on any away teams that I might find myself assigned to.
Storm: I’m sure you won’t be useless on any away team missions, but I do hope you won’t need to use a phaser on missions often. That would likely mean that I hadn’t done my job well …
With a bit of mirth, they raised their hands up, pretending at a bit of embarrassment over the accidentally implied insult. Lt. Storm was taking her jokes in stride, so why not have some more fun with it?
Vhysa’lia: Oh, I wasn’t implying anything! Not in the slightest.
Storm: I know you weren’t. But let’s be honest, how many away team missions go according to plan?
She smiled in return.
Vhysa’lia: Fair enough, from the stories I’ve heard, it seems like an away mission going according to plan would be cause for alarm, as that would be some sort of… ::trying to come up with the words:: galactically catastrophic statistical anomaly.
If everything went perfect, that meant something even worse had to have happened, right? That seemed to be the Starfleet philosophy, as far as they could tell.
Storm: ::Gesturing with the PADD she had removed from under her arm.:: Exactly! At least not the ones that I’ve been on.
The lieutenant tapped away at her PADD and Vhysa’lia waited patiently to see what exactly was being prescribed to her.
Storm: So I was going over your last certification. ::Points to the info from her last cert on the PADD.:: It doesn’t have a lot of information other than straight scores. I can usually garner a good starting place from the things that it’s not telling me, so why don’t we start with some easy drills and we can go from there. How’s that sound?
What with all the PADDwork and chaos from the somewhat complicated method of her arrival, any data from the Kobali Medical Corps weapons training was unexpected. Probably meant that it had all been packed up and delivered with the orders they had gotten at the start anyhow.
Vhysa’lia: I’m surprised my “scores” even made it over… ::shrugging:: That sounds sensible. ::little mock bow, arms outstretched:: I’m in your hands, Lieutenant Storm.
Wherever she steered, Vhysa’lia would follow.
Storm: Response
That didn’t seem too hard a drill, hopefully she wasn’t truly taking the “useless on an away team” comment to heart. Lt. Storm had said they’d start easy, but that barely seemed a challenge at all.
Vhysa’lia: Wonderful! And is there a model you recommend using…? Or that I’m supposed to use for this recertification? I’m unfamiliar with the entire gamut of options that are available to Starfleet officers… or which ones I might be permitted to use.
Being a provisional officer, she wasn’t completely sure at times what fell into the category of “not for you”. Not that there were many restrictions, but every so often when they’d been poking into things, there had been one or two notices of things that were restricted to full Starfleet officers only. It wouldn’t surprise her if some of the more fancy and flashy weapons might be not permitted for general use at this time. Not that a recertification was time to experiment with things like that, but she was just curious anyways.
Storm: Response
With a quick command to the computer, they called up the specific phaser pistol variety that the Lieutenant specified, testing out the feel in their hands. Subtly different from the phased polaron personal arms of the Kobali Medical Corps, as well as the discarded and salvaged phaser weapons acquired during Frontier Day (perhaps they were older models, the Kitty Hawk had in fact been a much older ship, she recalled).
Vhysa’lia: I’m ready, let’s do this!
Storm: Response
The first drill, short and simple, went by quickly. If anything, it felt more like a warmup than anything serious, probably as with the difference from the Kobali files and criterion for passing, they needed to start from the very beginning to properly judge her skills. They took a few deep breaths, before focusing in as the holographic targets flashed in and out of sight.
It wasn’t perfect, far from it, but to Vhysa’lia, it was at least serviceable. Mostly hits, rather than misses, thankfully. Even with the different grip, and slightly different response, the muscle memory still held. Whether or not any of that muscle memory was from her kyn’steya, she had no idea. But it wasn’t too far-fetched, even if a bit distasteful.
Vhysa’lia: So, is that enough to graduate me out of “useless” on an away team?
Storm: Response
