If things don't go well, humor remains. It is one of the things that will always be there, even in the darkest moments. As his people used to say:
'Even if you have to say your last words before they hang you, there is always a joke to tell.’

Jaseb did not understand what “hang” had to do with the man, but he still understood the meaning. If the situation is terrible, you can still make jokes about it. So he did.

The commander looked serious as he considered the answer. But he gave the one, the one Jaseb expected. He made no promises.

Dakora: I wish I could look you in the eye and promise you that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, none of those things are going to happen tomorrow. Or next week. Or next month. But unfortunately, I can’t.

The commander remained honest and open, and his response was well thought out.

Dakora: But I do expect things to be calm. At least for a little while.

Jaseb gazed at the commander for a while and then nodded.

oO Nyah, these old sayings are no longer relevant… Oo

Chevalier: Let's have hope, sir, one step forward at a time.

After savouring the last sip of his steaming raktajino, Dakora leaned back into his chair and clasped his hands together, placing them on his lap.

Dakora: I’d suggest you get out there and try to enjoy your shore leave. Have some fun. Step outside your comfort zone. I’m sure you aren’t the only one eager for a little distraction.

Chevalier lifted his PADD with his application and transfer request and examined its illuminated screen before his eyes peered over the top of the device.

Chevalier: Easier said than done, commander. There's a lot to do around this ship to keep the lights on and the engines running.

He smiled, then calmly placed the device back on his lap, hidden from view under the table.

Chevalier: But, and I will guess here while speaking openly, sir, based on the three pips on your uniform of red, and fancy office upstairs, you upgraded to, the proper answer is… ::put on a professional face:: I will do as ordered, sir!

A moment later, ensign Chevalier averted the commander's gaze and bit his lip hard to keep from laughing. Talos stood up, and Jaseb followed.

Dakora: That’s all I have for you, Mister Chevalier. You’re dismissed. ::He screwed up his face just a little.:: Just remember that whatever our next mission brings, this crew has each other’s backs.

Chevalier: Thank you, sir. I never doubt that, sir. Let me say - I hope you enjoy your shore leave at DS9 or Bajor. If you need any advice on places to visit, I can gladly rate all the places listed in the Starfleet Travel Guide as highly recommended. They are the jewels of the quadrant and you won't be disappointed with any of them.

Jaseb nodded to Talos, turned on the spot, and stepped out of his office. As he was outside, he sadly smiled as he looked at the PADD in his hands and then tucked it back under his arm. There was still a micro-resonator to obtain and a transporter platform in Transporter Room 1, which needed to be cleaned before he could even begin to think about choosing his rest and vacation options from the training and service list of different divisions…
