((Sickbay – USS Artemis-A))

Adea’s eyes flicked downwards to the wound in Hopper’s chest, and he gave her an empathetic smile.

Adea: I won’t lie to you, it is bad. If you were a human, I would be having this conversation with your next of kin. But Kraal has done good work, and I should be able to remove the shrapnel with a minimum of fuss.

Genkos could tell that she was shaken by that, but he thought it was important for her to realise the severity of the situation. Partly so she could try and avoid it next time, but mainly that if anything did go wrong in the ICU, she would be somewhat prepared.

The doctor pushed the biobed through a doorway, which slid shut behind him – the din of the rest of sickbay hushing behind the privacy screen. Gnaxac began dressing in the surgical reds - an unflattering outfit for anyone, but a great leveller. A couple of nurses entered a moment later and began the final preparations.

Hopper: I’m… ready…

Adea: Good. So am I. ::nodding to the nurses:: We’re going to knock you out in a moment, Robin.

Genkos picked up a small laser torch, designed to remove clothing around such wounds. With a gentle downward action, he carefully cut it away. He noticed that Hopper was trying to view the wound, which caused him to smile softly. Curiosity was a sign of intelligence, but not necessarily common sense. As the uniform was moved away, he saw a rather picturesque bruise. It was rather large, and quite angry, but it was also a very nice shade of purple. Genkos withheld the urge to take a photo of it for his tailor.

Hopper: I can… do this…

Adea: That I’m sure. Now, you’re going to feel a little prick…

By which he didn’t mean Talos…

The hypospray of one of the nurses hit her neck and by the time the hiss was over, she was unconscious. Genkos turned to his two nurses.

Adea: Right, let’s get this thing out of her.

The two nurses stood by to staunch the flow of blood as Genkos made the first incision. It was not wise to simply pull the shard out, as satisfying as it might be, so instead they needed to seal off all the impacted tissue. They did that together, moving slowly down either side of the shrapnel.

Once all the tissue was fully sealed, Genkos took ahold of the shrapnel and gently tugged it out, tossing it in a tray, especially for the purpose. Then they moved together to seal up the lung, and then back up through the layers of tissue.

It was long, arduous work, and he and his nurses were painstaking in their thoroughness. And all in all it took about three hours to heal it all up. Once it was all sealed, Genkos began scanning the tissue for any resulting damage or ill effects. He stroked his chin at the results, before popping down his tools.

Adea: Fabulous work - move her into the Recovery Wing, and let me know when she’s awake.

((Later, Recovery Wing))

After a quick cup of uttaberry green tea, and the briefest of sonic showers, Genkos was summoned back to Hopper’s bedside. He saw that she was reading a PADD, which she set aside when she saw him coming. He stood at the foot of her bed, his hands interlaced atop the handle of his cane.

Hopper: ::Tired::  Hiya, Commander… Thank you for stopping by again. I appreciate the updates.

Adea: That’s my job.

Hopper: I squeezed some information out of Kraal. He tried to tell me things were looking up, but I pulled rank and put the screws on him a little… He said something about a “not insignificant effect on healthy lung function?”

Genkos nodded, and moved down the side of her bed, sitting on the bed next to her. He placed his cane alongside him, and gave her a small smile.

Adea: Yes, although I did ask them not to tell you anything just yet. But I understand why he did. I won’t coat it in sugar for you, Robin, but your lung was seriously injured. Although we were able to seal it back up, it is going to take some time to heal. I reckon about 6-8 weeks. I’ve already let your CMO know back on Amity.

Hopper: Response

Adea: For at least the next two weeks, I am forbidding you from carrying out any activity that increases respiration. No aerobic exercise of any kind, nothing faster than a small walk, certainly no sexual activity or away missions. Although I am certain that if you did try something strenuous, your body would warn you off it.

Hopper: Response

Adea: I’m not confining you to your bed, but I highly recommend staying seated or even lying down for as much time as possible, and do not forget the healing benefits of sleep. However, that goes hand in hand with this. ::he held up a vial:: I am putting you on a course of treatment for radiation sickness and burns, hyronalyn and bolamite, two vials of each a day. Before bed, and when you get up. Hyronalyn will prevent you from getting nauseous and should stabilise your symptoms, whilst the bolamite will heal the actual burns. Do you have any questions?

"You know, I'm really easy to get along with most of the time, but I don't like bullies and I don't like threats, and I don't like you, Culluh. You can try and stop us from getting to the truth but I promise you that if you do I will respond with all the 'unique technologies' at my command." - Kathryn Janeway
