((Counselor's Office - Deck 7, USS Artemis-A))

Jashkaa nodded and her hand returned to her knee as she looked at the Mizarian - if she kept twisting that ring, her whole finger would come off. She indicated it with a wave of her hand.

Jashkaa: So this is you struggling with the concept of morality versus duty?

Sadar: I… I suppose so, yes. I’ve been warned already that the oath ‘Do No Harm’ is sometimes at odds with what is required when serving in Starfleet… But, it’s… ::sighs::

Jashkaa was fascinated - here was a woman, an exemplary officer by all accounts, who was having real trouble moralising her behaviour. Actions that most officers might be able to brush off as being necessary or for the greater good, Gila seemed to obsess over. It was amazing this Mizarian had got as far as she had within Starfleet, the amount of double and triple guessing she was achieving.

Jashkaa left a pause, in case Gila decided to fill in the gap, but after a sold ten seconds nothing seemed to be coming except maybe another sigh, so the woman opened her thin green lips to posit a question.

Jashkaa: You’re clearly struggling with Starfleet rules versus your own code - tell me about that code. Where does it come from?

Sadar: … It’s not an easy moral codex to dismiss. The Tenets - the moral framework of my entire people - denounces violence and preaches surrender and non-resistance… ::twists her ring:: Disregarding every lesson I was taught prior to leaving my home system is proving… More difficult than I’d anticipated.

Jashkaa nodded; she understood completely. Not many Orions chose to join Starfleet, and those that did were often seen as little more than Security fodder or, in her case, a bit of skirt. It had taken her a long time to make certain professors see past her looks to the insightful brain matter underneath.

Jashkaa: I understand. But do you have to disregard them all? Compromise is often seen as a dirty word, but I have never understood why… ::she pursed her lips:: Actually that’s not true. If I may, Starfleet is primarily built around the tenets of the original species, and every additional species has to find their way to fit in that structure. They are expected by many within the Federation to “fit in” and not the other way around.

Sadar: Response

Jashkaa: What I’m saying, suggesting even, is that perhaps you are bending too much to go with the flow. Bend too much, and you’ll break. Tell me, if you had all the power of a Commodore, what is one thing you would like to change?

Sadar: Response

"You know, I'm really easy to get along with most of the time, but I don't like bullies and I don't like threats, and I don't like you, Culluh. You can try and stop us from getting to the truth but I promise you that if you do I will respond with all the 'unique technologies' at my command." - Kathryn Janeway
