(( Captain’s Ready Room – Deck 1, Artemis-A ))
Talos sat across from MacKenzie in her recently refurbished ready room. He pretended not to notice the subtle hints of a rush job, done with resources stretched thin as they went over their readiness reports to Starfleet Command. Thus far he’d managed to redirect her attention back to some part of the report whenever he felt her irritation about that particular sore subject reach its peak, but Talos wasn’t sure how much longer he’d be able to keep it up.
With the bulk of their work done, he felt a scolding coming on at any moment, when the saving grace of the door chime sounded.
MacKenzie: Come in!
The tall, thin man who stepped through the door wore a gold collar and snapped to attention once he was near the desk they were seated at.
Bergmen: Ensign Olliver Bergmen, Operations, reporting to duty, ma’am. ::turns to Dakora and nods:: Sir.
The new guy produced a Padd with his transfer orders and set it on the desk in front of MacKenzie, returning to his rigid posture.
Addison picked up the PADD, but pointed to Talos before diving into the contents.
MacKenzie: You start.
He gave her a single nod, doing his best not to reveal that he hadn’t been expecting the new Ensign. Talos usually managed to stay abreast of all of their new arrivals, but he’d been off enjoying some leave time on Earth for the past few days and must’ve missed Mister Bergmen’s dossier.
He’d just have to roll with it as they launched into one of the Captain’s infamous onboarding interrogations.
Dakora: Welcome Aboard, Mister Bergmen. I’m Commander Talos Dakora, the Artemis’ XO and this is Captain MacKenzie.
Bergmen: Response
Addison dropped the padd onto her desk unceremoniously, a harsh metal-on-metal clink sound providing an uncomfortable ambiance for the exchange.
She dove right into the questioning.
MacKenzie: So, Ensign, why are you interested in Ops?
Bergmen: Response
Talos listened to the response, raising an eyebrow as his mind brushed against a presence that felt much older than the fresh-faced kid in front of him appeared to be.
He picked up the thread Addison had started.
Dakora: Is that so? ::He crossed his arms across his chest and leaned back into his chair.:: Our Ops officers tend to wear many hats… It’s sort of a necessity for the job. How are you at multi-tasking?
Bergmen: Response
Talos nodded at the response, keeping his face neutral as he glanced toward Addison for her opinion. The hard-ass act always felt like a stretch for the typically laid-back Betazoid. He usually only got serious when the situation demanded it, but in the last year, he’d managed to adapt to the way his Captain operated.
