((Crashed Jem'Hadar
Fighter - Outskirts of the Bantlox Colony, Laoi III ))
The trio investigating the Jem’Hadar fighter had largely completed their
mission – they’d managed to find one of the eyepieces and hopefully, if it worked,
they were well on their way to disabling whatever was causing the interference.
That, an apparently a lot of other tasks, too. Kyle hadn’t been aware just how
much the device could do.
Morgan: So, how do we use it?
Silveira: We put it around our neck?
Imril: Over your head, like a pair of headphones. Here, let me take
that.
With a raised eyebrow, Kyle watched as Imril took the eyepiece from Sil and tested the weight of it in his hands. From Imril’s response, the device was heavier than he expected. He watched as the engineer held the rectangular-shaped device in front of his head, looking at the rifle through the eyepiece. Judging by the look on his face, Imril wasn’t impressed, and Kyle assumed the device likely wasn’t going to be useful. His brow furrowed, and he bothered to ask the question for clarity, anyway.
Morgan: Can you see anything… helpful?
Vitor raised his hand to indicate that Kyle wait a moment.
Silveira: Let Imril settle in with it, Kyle. That isn’t an LCARS system
Imril: I think I actually have to wear it. This box on the other side, here, that’s a neural interface of some sort. The units the Niners found had no security lockouts. Ordinarily, I’d make sure this one didn’t with my tricorder, but… Well, the rest of this ship didn’t have any security going on, did it?
Well that didn’t seem like a good idea. At least Kyle would
be there to assist if something went wrong. He looked on as Imril’s spine
stiffened as he raised the device to his head, the eyepiece resting just in
front of his left eye.
Silveira: Remember baby steps. Take it slowly, the last thing we want is the
ship firing.
Imril: I’m in no hurry, trust me. OK, a little hurry. This isn’t the best-smelling place for -- Eiaah!
The instant Imril put the thing atop their head, there was a physical response and Kyle could tell something was happening.
Morgan: Ensign?
Vitor seemed interested in encouraging Imril to persist forward.
Silveira: C’mon Ensign, time to show us that famed Engineering magic
Imril: It will be magic enough if I can keep standing. Wow. I can’t tell if I’m looking at you two through the eyepiece, or if the image of you is being stamped directly onto my brain, or both.
Morgan: Are you able to continue?
Silveira: response
Imril: Give me, give me a moment. I think I’m getting used to it. There’s no control panel to look at or blink commands to. Just a view of the space around me. ::Looking towards the rifle, focusing on it:: Oh! Found the zoom function!
Imril shook his head, before reaching out with his hand to offer his wrist light to one of the others. Kyle accepted the device.
Imril: I have an idea. Someone take that outside, please, and shine it around the walls of the corridor we passed.
Silveira: response
Kyle raised an eyebrow and nodded, retreating back into the corridor as asked. He took several steps, trying to make sure the pair couldn’t still see the light, before proceeding to shine it around the hallway as instructed. He waited for any verbal confirmation before stopping.
Imril: Yeah, I'm looking through the wall into the other corridor. This thing might be responding to micro-movements of my eye. Tracking where I’m trying to focus and showing me what’s there. Either that, or it's drilling into my brain to work out which way I want to look. Hard to tell which.
Morgan: I assume that’s a good thing?
Silveira: response
Imril looked back to the rifle, likely to no avail judging
by the look on his face.
Imril: ::Wincing:: No good. It’s not acknowledging any energy traces at all. Just applying zoom-and-enhance filters to the outside of the weapon. But I think we can piece together a full spherical view of the ship with this thing. It’s just a matter of staring in the right direction and seeing what system or systems are active. I’m open to other ideas.
Imril pulled the device from his head and gasped with relief.
Morgan: There must still be something still active on the ship that’s creating the interference… Sil, maybe you’d better take over for Imril…
Imril/Silveira: response
Kyle shot Sil a skeptical look.
Morgan: Hey, I wouldn’t even know where to start with the thing. And besides, if I go down, who’s gonna look after the two of you? Gila’s gonna have my behind as it is!
Silveira/Imril: Response
Morgan looked to Imril, then pointed at the device.
Morgan: You think you can coach him through how to use that?
Imril/Silveira: Response
Tag, and TBC!
