((Turret, Ki Baratan, Romulus))
Genkos was settled into the turret’s chair and gave Jovenan what he hoped was a reassuring grin. He didn’t feel it, but this team needed all the confidence he could muster.
Adea: Fabulous, now see if there’s a way to disconnect the planetary defense network. Perhaps a few cables that can be pulled out?
Gnai: ::calling up to the second landing:: Was that an order to Lieutenant Jovenan?
Jovenan: I don’t think we can do it from up here, at least not easily. The hardware seemed to mostly on the lower level.
Sadar: Beyond breaking into the turret wiring itself, we have few access points down here, Sir, but we’ll see what we can do.
Genkos nodded at Gila, then drew his attention back to the screen in front of him, looking through all the different controls and trying to figure out precisely which one he needed to pull in order to blow the Senator to kingdom come.
Gnai: Perhaps... it looks too clean?
Sadar: Agreed.
Gnai: Hm. ::thinking, inspired by the order to Jovenan to 'pull a few cables':: Would the Dominion know how to operate Romulan technology...?
Sadar: Well, they have been in on-going peace talks with Romulan politicians, but given their guarded ways, I doubt they got the grand tour...
Genkos was amused slightly by the way that Gnai and Gila seemed to chunter away to each other whilst they worked, but that Genkos and Jovenan worked in relative silence… at least until Jovenan spoke.
Jovenan: Ugh. I don’t think any of these ships matches what we’re looking for, unless they’re trying to float around the orbit to fool us. The Senator’s vessel might still be under cloak for all we know.
Adea: Can you scan for that?
Gnai: ::turning its speakers up to call to the second level:: Perhaps opening panels could better sell the lie that this was the Dominion. The Dominion are likely unfamiliar with the technological systems outside of the Gamma Quadrant?
Jovenan peeked out from the second level down to Gnai, and Genkos gave her a positive shrug.
Jovenan: Yes, sounds good. Just don’t pull out anything important until after we’ve hit them!
Adea: Good thinking, Ensign!
Turning back to the screens, Jovenan’s eyes caught something and she pointed at a small collection of dots.
Jovenan: Sir, look at this. ::points:: These ships decloaked just a moment ago. One smaller shuttle, with flight plan to Ki Baratan, and two larger, um, warbirds I think, following its course but staying behind. Could this be our… our target?
Genkos leaned in and looked at it - it seemed too good to be true, their target revealing themselves at the optimum moment.
Adea: I think it might be. We best start aiming.
Jovenan: ::to downstairs:: We’re going to need the firing controls as soon as possible now!
Adea: Please and thank you!
Genkos called down, his voice a little shakier than usual. When it hadn’t been immediate, he hadn’t had to think about the consequence of his actions. Even if by doing this they undid CloQ’s changes, Genkos was still about to pull the trigger on the deaths of a Senator and several aides/staff. If the Romulans ever discovered it, they would quite rightly consider it cold blooded murder.
Gnai: Response
Sadar: ::grumbles:: We should’ve replicated tricorders… ::pulls open one of the loose panels:: Security and Network Connection, Security and Network Connection, Security- Aha!
Genkos could feel the tension in the room rising, but he tried to block it out, concentrating instead on the mechanism in front of him. He pressed a sliding control and felt the turret judder into life.
Jovenan: Target entering the firing range in less than five minutes!
Adea: Getting ready to aim.
Gnai: Response
Sadar: I’ve found something that looks like a Communication interface. Considering the lack of a personnel element, it likely links this turret to other Defensive infrastructure in the city.
Genkos narrowed his eyes as he peered closer at the unfamiliar technology. It was confusing enough trying to utilise a weapon of this size, doubly so in another language.
Jovenan: I’m not sure if I can establish a lock on the shuttle. I’ll keep trying, but you might need to shoot with only the targeting sensors.
Adea: We’ll do our best.
Gnai: Response
Sadar: I wish Lieutenant Yellir was with us right now… ::loud voice:: Standing by to disconnect. ::to Gnai:: Ensign? Please see if you can locate any failsafes. We should make sure the turret can’t compensate when I manually disconnect it from the other nodes in the system.
Gnai: Response
The dot moved across the screen and entered a bubble around their current location. Genkos took a deep breath as he considered what might happen next.
Jovenan: Target in the firing range! We have only a few minutes fire the shot or they’ll reach the shields around the Government Quarters!
Gnai/Sadar: Response
As soon as the communications and other connections to the defence network were disabled, the turret’s own systems reacted as one would expect a ship computer to do when gaining damage to a critical system; the slightly green hue of the lights turned bright, pulsating purple, and the alarm klaxon rang almost deafeningly loud. Red alert, no matter the species and culture, was always enough to cause a heart to skip a beat. No doubt the security outside the door would hear the alarm as well and act accordingly, so they had very little time.
On the screen, the sensor readings also disappeared as they could no longer reach input by the planetary grid, leaving Jovenan and Genkos mostly blind. However, new screens lit up with data, seemingly from the gun core that had begun to whirr in anticipation of fulfilling its purpose.
Jovenan: We have the weapon’s control, but we’ve lost the sensors!
Adea: We will have to do it by hand!
Gnai/Sadar: Response
Raising her eyes off from the screen, Jovenan looked through the transparent dome into the city.
Jovenan: There!
Genkos followed her gaze and his eyes widened as he saw the vessel in the flesh as it were. It was a little more… personal now that he could see it rather than it being dots on a screen.
Adea: Okay… Wish me luck.
Gnai/Sadar: Response
Genkos took aim, slowly raising the turret so that the barrel faced their target straight on. He could almost see the alarm on the pilot’s face as they realised they were being targeted by their own weapons’ systems. He took a long deep breath as he readied himself to end a life. On the exhale, he fired, and saw the blast leave the end of the barrel. It connected with the shuttle, he saw the immediate impact as the shuttle veered off course and directly towards them.
The shuttle loomed large in the domed roof until it collided and the whole universe seemed to end in a bright white light.
