There was no actual good reason for Gila to feel so apprehensive about Kolya encountering her colleagues, she supposed. Now that lived on the same starship as them, it was only a matter of time before they started exerting their alien influences on him. And, in the end, wasn’t that exactly why his mother had chosen to send him to live with Gila? To offer Kolya the broader horizons?

No, that wasn’t it, and Gila knew it. It didn’t matter that Eyla wouldn’t voice it, but Gila could feel the noose drawing closer. It was only a matter of time before the debt came due, and now that she was his guardian, it was her duty to ensure that he still maintained a Mizarian upbringing in case he ever wanted to go back there.

At least one of them should have that opportunity.

Sadar: A-At the moment, he’s getting accustomed to his new living arrangements, and researching the various educational offers that allow remote learning within the Federation, but, I’ll, uhh... I-I’ll mention it to him. ::shuffles slightly::

Gila felt quite comfortable in the knowledge that the topic of Kolya had been exhausted, even by Commander Adea’s sociable standards, so taking a swig of the spiced tea and reveling in its strangely familiar taste, she dared to turn the topic onto the Commander himself. A much less tender topic.

Sadar: Do you, uhh... H-Have any plans while we’re docked, Sir? I-I realize DS224 is supposed to be something of a, uhh, ‘home port’ for us?

Gila was sure that the sudden brazenness she demonstrated was a shock to the Commander, who at this point knew her personality quite well, so she busied her hands with the empty mug to avoid twisting her anxiety band again. Another habit she was trying to tone down, as it seemed her senior officers were starting to use it against her.

Adea: Well my mother and her new boyfriend live on the station, so I am going to try and squeeze in a few visits with them.

For some reason, that surprised Gila. She wasn’t sure why - she supposed she never properly considered the idea of where her senior officers’ families were in the galaxy. She knew that people lived in space, obviously - she’d lived on Starbase 118 for five years herself - but the idea that some of the crew had family this close to their campaign region surprised her...

It could be because she didn’t consider the Borderlands a particularly safe part of the galaxy, or it could be because she had this notion that all of them were ‘far from home’. Gila tried to imagine what it would be like to serve on a Ship close to Mizabet, and an uncomfortable shiver traveled down her spine.

She would not like it at all.

Sadar: Oh. That sounds... ::tries to ascertain the Commander’s feelings on his family from his expression:: Nice?

Adea: I say new boyfriend, but I think they’ve been together quite a few years now…

Divorce and separation. More alien concepts to her that she both found intensely uncomfortable and rather groundbreaking. She wondered how outraged her family would be if she ever deigned to explain those concepts to them.

Sadar: Did you grow up in the Borderlands, Sir, or did your mother move here after you got posted to the region?

Adea: Response

Sadar: Oh, right, I completely forgot... ::pales:: The fact that I can forget that I travelled through time, and honestly say it isn’t the craziest thing to have happened in the past year.

Adea: Response

Gila paled at the idea of picking out just one of the numerous insane incidents that had occurred over the past year to pick as the ‘Lowlight’ of the year. All of it was anxiety-inducing, terrifying and many of them would no doubt have involved a likely court martial of her if it wasn’t intensely confidential information.

Sadar: ... I-I must admit, I hadn’t anticipated crashing the saucer of a Galaxy Class onto Luna in my second year in-service. ::considers:: Wh-What about you, Sir? And please don't say 'just another year'.

Adea: Response
